CG/KPOO/KCDX etcetcetc for the week of 8/18/08

More '70s Soul: Just got home from the doctor and Judge is doing a salute to '70s Motown. Diana & Marvin, "You're a Special Part of Me", which I haven't heard in eons. Followed by an obscure J-5 LP track, "Life of the Party". DAY-um!

Lordy! Gladys gets as down'n'nasty as she ever did: "You Need Love Like I Do (Don't You?)"

"I'm a girl and you're a guy
Come on, let's give love a try"

More tasty obscurities: The Miracles' first post-Smokey single: "Don't Let it End", and the Tempts' "Hey Girl (I Like Your Style)", criminally neglected by pop radio in 1973, despite being a #2 R&B hit.

"What you say? Shut yo' mouth!"

No, it's not Shaft -- it's Gladys' "Daddy" -- who could swear, I declare. And Gladys & the Pips probably swore too, since releasing this as a single the same week as their debut Buddah 45 ("Where Peaceful Waters Flow") came out, was Motown's revenge for their leaving the label. (As a result both records had mediocre pop chart success.)

Another Temptations '73 rarity: "Plastic Man" -- why was pop radio so down on them that summer? Whitfield wah-wah weariness?

I'm "Tempt"-ed to sit here and comment all day, since virtually every song has been a gem so far.  But geoff would need a new posting category for me! And (total sick-day bonus!) the Giants game is on TV in a few.

Holy crap! Jermaine Jackson's cover of "Ain't That Peculiar", new to me.

Holy Flaming Mother of Berry Gordy!  new to me and just a stunner: Undisputed Truth, "What It Is", another Whitfield workout. Gaz, you'd LOVE this one, methinks.

And now Stevie's "Too High" -- and I'm feeling a bit like a tangerine mahself.

Judge has concentrated on '70 to '74 so far; he says 2pm-4pm will be '75 to '79.  I wish I'd been in a position to record this sucker.

Judge closes the '70-'74 segment with the Tempts' "Funky Music Sho' 'Nuff Turns Me On", which was a bigger hit for Edwin Starr...

...and he kicks off '75-'79 with MJ's sweet "We're Almost There", which could easily have been a hit for Diana.

Judge's second half, '75-'79, was a calvalcade of obscurities, almost all of them NTM (New To Me):

  • Rick James, "Coppin' Blow" (LP cut, NTM)
  • Rose Banks (of Sly's Family), "Whole New Thing", NTM
  • Jr Walker covering Ms Flack's "Feel Like Makin' Love" in '76, NTM
  • Jerry Butler (during his brief Motown tenure), "I Wanna Do It To You", from '78, NTM
  • Eddie Kendicks' last Motown 45, "Intimate Friends", NTM
  • Willie Hutch's fabulous "Love Power"

Also a Bonnie Pointer hit I'd always heard of but had never heard, with the "WTF?" improbable title of "Free Me From My Freedom, Tie Me To a Tree (Handcuff Me)" (!) and a looooooooooooooong version of "Love Hangover" -- Judge mentioned earlier (and I'd never heard this) that Diana and Marvin's duets LP was recorded with them in separate studios because Marvin was smoking a LOT of pot at the time and Diana couldn't stand the smell!

Mike, all I can say is that I wish I'd spent this afternoon listening alongside ya.  Will YouTube the Un/Truth and maybe a couple others tonight as I make like Marvin.

Ha!

And as if the above weren't enuf, KPOO's Mon nite Oldies guy did a 4-hour Holland-Dozier-Holland retrospective -- all the hits, plus rarities and B-sides. Amazing.

Listening to Saturday's CGSS and Greg is doing *his* Isaac Hayes tribute, starting with his writing/producing stuff for Sam & Dave and Carla T.

and from Queens to Candi Staten Island -- Greg plays her fab cover of "Nights on B'way", so we've covered 3 boroughs in one post.
