Should anyone be in a middle-of-the-road mood ... playlist so far has ranged from David Foster's "Love Theme From St. Elmo's Fire" to Paolo Conte's "Via Con Me."

this is one WEIRD-ASS station, Gaz.  A drippy ballad by Marilyn Maye (is she still alive?), followed by the theme from some nautically-themed '60s sitcom (McHale's Navy, maybe?), followed by "High Noon", followed by Streisand, "Theme from 'Eyes of Laura Mars'" (!?!).

I do love the fact that a lot of these tunes seem to be coming off vinyl, however.

OMG! "How Do You Keep the Music Playing?" Now THAT's MOR!

Hearing Peggy March, "Soul Coaxing (If You Loved Me)" on the MOR Memories station.  What a trip!  No-longer-little Peggy nicks the opening from the Cowsills' "Rain, Park, etc" and her delivery style is neighborly to Lesley Gore and Petula Clark.  What an unexpected pleasure.

And the station segued from that into "Baretta's Theme (Keep Your Eye on the Sparrow)."  WTF?!

Seriously, this is a fine late-night-listening station, quirks and all.

Wow, I never knew that song had lyrics (the instrumental version by Raymond Lefevre hit #37 in 1968). One of my fiftysomething lesbian friends had a major Peggy March jones -- to the extent of buying German import 45s of hers.

no, he hasn't. and why not? all the particulars are present.

in other news, i played the vocal version of the love theme from st. elmo's fire at the bar the other night - the crowd went mad! none of them had ever heard the version with words. a two-hour mare winningham convo ensued.

Well, my friend has a longtime partner and twin 12-year-old daughters.

Didja ever see that movie with Jennifer Jason-Leigh as a druggie musician and Mare Winningham as her sister?  Can't recall the title.

yikes! Sergio Mendez, "Alibis". If there wasn't a country cover version of this... there shoulda been.

and speaking of alibis: "used-to-be's don't count anymore/they just lay on the floor 'til we sweep them away..."  Barbra & Neil!

and here's that Peggy March song Gaz mentioned. Yes, it's VERY Pet Clark-meets-Lez Gore.

and speaking of Ms Gore... the King Cousins (!) covering "California Nights".  Followed by Cyndi Grecco's Laverne & Shirley theme. This guy's got some amazing record collection.

New to me: Lana Cantrell doing a poppy, upbeat version of Donovan's "Catch The Wind", which cribs from both the Judy Collins arrangement of "Both Sides Now" and the Cyrkle's "Red Rubber Ball".

WHA? what's Curtis M's "Freddies Dead" doin' in the middle of all this?

Holy sh!t: Jo Anne Worley plays it straight on the maudlin "Why Won't You Come Home?"  Vikki Carr must have lost a bet.

Oh, wait: It's not so straight any more.  Ms. Worley rocks my face off.

all over the place today, from the Carpenters to the Blackbyrds to Gordon Lightfoot to Peggy Lee doing "Brother Love's Travelling Salvation Show" (!?!)

And an odd-but-nice orchestral medley of "Like to Get to Know You"/"Give a Damn".
