Judge plays the legendary Betty Davis, who often shows up on lists of "the greatest artists you've never heard of".

a post-Motown Willie Hutch, circa 1980, with "Disco Thang".
-
doing WLNG today; they just played the "rarities" version of "Penny Lane" with the extra horn flourish at the end.
-
eeek! 'LNG plays Starship's nearly-worthless "Sara", surely one of the worst #1's of the '80s. "storms are brewing in your eyes" -- really? And yet "We Built This City" is the one people hate. Yeesh.
-
Spyder Turner's cover of "Stand By Me", in which he does fair-to-middling impressions of Jackie Wilson, David Ruffin, Billy Stewart, Smokey Robinson, Chuck Jackson. Def one of the odder Top 40 hits of the '60s
-
an hour of CG before CGSS gets under way with Elvis, "Way Down". Which is where he is, actually.

My CG player doesn't have a volume dial. :-X

Whaa? just below the guitar logo, no? if not, close and re-load. OMFG, David Soul's "Silver Lady", a #1 UK hit that did nothing over here (he's the guest this weekend on the retro-chart show).

Must be a Firefox thing; it's not there. No biggie smalls.
Kinda dug that "Silver Lady" song.

Celebrating MJ's birthday with "Man in the Mirror." I often forget how good this and "I Just Can't Stop Loving You" were.
-
I've always had a soft spot for MJ's "Man in the Mirror". Make that change (we can believe in)!
ETA: although all that "sha-maw!" stuff was the beginning of self-parody.
Oy, the Love Affair version of "Everlasting love" -- worst. mondegreening. EVAH.
-
Robert Knight's was the second-best "Everlasting Love," topped only by Carl Carlton's smash remake. Gloria E comes in third, Love Affair a distant last. (I've still never heard U2's version!)
-

One of us is misremembering covers. Prolly me.
ETA: Yup, I was wrong - which means I don't remember the Robert Knight version.

Don't forget the Rex Smith/Rachel Sweet duet!:

it ain't nuthin' but a house party, y'all! and the Isleys are invited!
-
I missed an hour of CGSS due to an errand that should only have taken 15 min. >:(
But I'm back in time to Keep on Truckin'!

Eddie K's a Red Ball Express -- of LOVIN'!

I know they're not singing " somebody help me out, Mee-owww!" but it sure sounds like it.
-
Sophisticated mama!
-
it's all ovah, Casanovah! Love that "contrary/extraordinary" rhyme.
-
Ah, so THAT's Bohannon! I'd long wondered what the Tom Tom Club was fussing about.
-
sounds like Greg should marry Sarah Palin. LOL!
-
I've only ever heard War's "You Got the Power" on the radio twice - both on CGSS.
-
"Mother Nature gave me 2 hands to hold you..." And in the case of Rick James, Teena Marie needed both, I'll wager!

Yes. He held a pipe with one hand while she held his with two.
-
I love this Jean Cairn "Was That All it Was?", a CGSS staple, cheezy synth-drums and all.
-
Shannon meets Peabody & Sherman -- "he's dancing his Wayback to me". Kidding aside, easily one of my fave dance records of the '80s.

In my top 10, full stop, of the '80s.

Lawd! the other MJ (Millie Jackson) sez "mah man, he a SWEET man!"
-
and speaking of 2 hands...

3 cheers for the fabulous Crown Heights Affair, soaring into the Galaxy of Love. Huge in the clubs back then, but largely unknown because they never had that crossover pop hit.

Another club hit that didn't cross over: KC & the Sunshine Band, "Sound Your Funky Horn."
-
Easily Bobby Brown's best moment: "Every Little Step."
-
This week Barry Scott does his yearly Top 100 countdown, based on listener requests. In at #100, TANC, "Who Do You Think You Are?"
FYI, #1 is usually something uber-cheezy like "Seasons in the Sun."
-
Hey Mike: "Ariel" made it in at #98, nudging out "Watching Scotty Grow." Is "Ariel" a common Jewish name?
-
Followed by the saddest disco song ever in its catching the notion of loneliness in a city of millions, Odyssey's pretty "Native New Yorker."
-
OMFGWTF!!! The (apparently original) version of "Lady Marmalade," by an outfit called the 11th Hour. Labelle performed some marvelous triage on this ailing patient. What painfully bad Muppet-like lead vocals. But they get credit for knowing more French than Patti, Sarah and Nona.
-
Barry's single edit of "Don't You Worry 'Bout a Thing," which of course excises the spoken intro, has really amped up the percussion. I'm liking it; wonder if that's a distinct mix or Barry's doing.
ETA: Barry confirmed: He played the 45, which is different from the others.
-
Wow, I didn't know I liked Gilbert O'Sullivan's "Out of the Question"! I'll chalk up "Get Down" as an aberration, since I dig its predecessors too.
-
Oh, weird: Barry plays a (presumably recent) interview with Neil Sedaka in which he admits to "a parting of the ways" with Carole King that he hopes they "can mend soon." Ooh girl! OTOH, he calls her "the genius of all time" and said she wrote more hits than anyone, "even Smokey."
Of course the interview clip is followed by "Bad Blood."
-
"I Believe There's Nothing Stronger Than" Paul Anka. But I'm usually displeased when there's a Strong Odia in the room.
-

I think Mr Friedman was poking some gentle fun at the notion of middle-class jews giving their kids NON-Jewish names. Like "Ariel"... and, er, "Dean".
