you are correct, sir!  Their sets usually end with whatever was #1 on this date in (year), so somebody was looking at the wrong chart I guess.  (#1 on this date in '89 was either "Hangin Tough", which they played, or Paula Abdul's "Cold Hearted")

Makes sense - I do believe G-n-R were #1 at this time in '88 (it being right at the time I started college, it's easy to remember).
