Best '92 set ever -- and the sort of wide-ranging assortment we'll never get from RR. The Neneh Cherry and Dolby songs were NTM and quite wonderful.   I know "Achy Breaky" is a HFH for many but it's an earworm and really encapsulates (for me) why Country radio was so much fun in the early '90s.

Starting the new year with a 4th visit to 1977:

 1. Wings - Girls' School
 2. Purify Bros. - Get Closer
(News: New York City blackout)
 3. Gruppo Sportivo - Mission A Paris
 4. Tom Jones - Take Me Tonight
(Movie: New York New York)
 5. Blue Öyster Cult - Goin' Through The Motions
 6. Engelbert Humperdinck - After The Lovin'
(Commercial: Crazy Eddie's)
 7. Dean Friedman - Funny Papers
 8. Glen Campbell - Southern Nights
(TV: Doctor Who)
 9. Pousette-Dart Band - Amnesia
10. The Beatles - Dizzy Miss Lizzy
(TV: Celebrity Cabaret - Jerry Seinfeld)
11. Purify Bros. - Slow Dancing

https://soundcloud.com/capnjack-1/147-10-10-1977

Feel free to comment away.  Cheers!

also fabulous -- hadn't heard that Gruppo Sportivo track in a dog's age. Never understood why that BOC tune wasn't a hit.

An even more ridiculously poppy BOC track is 1979's "You're Not the One (I Was Looking for)", a rather hilarious Cars imitation from their Mirrors LP.

BTW, it took a while to realize the Purify Bros were James and Bobby Purify, who unsuccessfully tried to make a comeback with that LP. Nice cover versions, both.

Originally I had planned a different year to start off the week, but with the passing of Phil Everly, I decided on a 4th visit to 1984:

 1. Spinal Tap - Tonight I'm Gonna Rock You Tonight
(Movie: Purple Rain)
 2. Prince and the Revolution - Baby I'm A Star
 3. Face To Face - 10-9-8
(TV: The Richard Belzer Show)
 4. U.T.F.O. - Roxanne, Roxanne
(Phil Everly interview)
 5. The Everly Brothers - On The Wings Of A Nightingale
(Paul McCartney interview)
 6. Paul McCartney - Not Such A Bad Boy
 7. John Lennon - (Forgive Me) My Little Flower Princess
 8. Elton John - Sad Songs (Say So Much)
(Movie: Footloose)
 9. Tina Turner - Private Dancer
(Eddie Van Halen interview)
10. Aztec Camera - Jump

https://soundcloud.com/retrocapnjack/132-10-10-1984

It took Phil Everly's passing to remind me of the Everly Brothers' EB 84 album.  Hope you enjoy!

 3. Badfinger - Love Is Gonna Come At Last
 4. France Joli - Come To Me (per RGMike)
(Outtake: The Knack - I Knew The Bride (When She Used To Rock And Roll))
 5. The Knack - Heartbeat
 6. Johnny Duncan - Slow Dancing (per Geoff)
 7. Sylvester - Body Strong (per RGMike)
 8. Blue Öyster Cult - In Thee
(Radio dial: Elvis Costello and the Attractions - Accidents Will Happen /
     Blondie - Accidents Never Happen)
 9. Blondie - Union City Blue
(Radio: Nick Lowe and Dave Edmunds - I Knew The Bride (When She Used To Rock And Roll))
10. Dave Edmunds - The Creature From The Black Lagoon /
Nick Lowe - Love So Fine

11. Wings - Baby's Request

https://soundcloud.com/capnjack-1/141-10-10-1979

All music set.  Let me know what you think!

(Movie: Purple Rain)
 2. Prince and the Revolution - Baby I'm A Star

"The Story! The Struggle! The Movie!"  Heh.

"Baby I'm a Star" is easily the most unfairly overlooked track from Purple Rain -- I can understand radio being squeamish about "Darling Nikki" but "...Star" kicks ass and shoulda been a single.

Another stellar collection. I remember visiting SF as a tourist that fall and listening to the short-lived radio station The City -- they played that Everly Bros tune quite a bit, and it was all-but-ignored back East.

6. Johnny Duncan - Slow Dancing

I remember some of his country hits, which still show up on ClassicCountry stations, but I'd never heard this before, and thank gawd -- that's some kinda cheezy awfulness.  ;)

There are some interesting country covers of pop songs that most folks have never heard -- that would make a great theme set, actually.

But BOS Blondie (easily one of my faves of theirs) and VHM BÖC, from their "let's be slick hitmakers" LP Mirrors, which I mentioned a few posts back. Their fans hated it and there was a big backlash.

It's kind of funny.  The original "Slow Dancing" from the Funky Kings is one of my favorite songs, so I'm interested in any cover.  But, every cover I've heard has a higher level of cheese.  This country one is way off the curd scale.  But I could see how it might appeal to a country audience.  I could imagine a jukebox in some old Texas roadhouse, and an old couple dancing to this song.

To me, the original doesn't sound cheesy at all, just tender and vulnerable.
Don't stand in the way of LOVE!

The original was beloved by radio and music-biz types who all knew who Jack Tempchin was -- everyone was baffled when it failed to be a big hit. I think the Johnny Rivers version (which I quite like) benefitted from that I-wish-somebody-would-have-a-hit-with-this-song! sentiment.
