8. New York Dolls - Looking For A Kiss
So, everything about this band seems like a joke to me.  Is it obvious, or is the joke on me and they're really serious?

I did d/l a set yesterday on someone else's computer, and I am confused...  I listened to a few
minutes at the beginning, then skipped to the end.  Are you wrapping RR introductions etc.
around your own sets?  (And if so, couldn't you find some DM or AL intros instead?)
I'm using RR's introductions and backsells around my sets.  I would use DM and/or AL intros if I
had any to use.  The only DM ones I currently have access to are his infamous "Hits From Hell" sets

If you're offering me access to your DM/AL recordings, I'd be happy to start/end my sets with their
voices.  ;)

Out of curiosity, which year did you choose to listen?

I have about 160 recordings, covering most years.  All on cassette, of course!  But unless you're
nearby I don't think the logistics would work out.  I thought somebody else had some DM
recordings online, but I don't know who or where.

Without looking at any set lists, I grabbed 1967.  But I didn't even finish the first song.  (I was
busy.)  But it seemed so unlike anything RR would play, so I skipped to the (nonexistent) backsell.

Suggestion:  Create a text file with all your annotated set lists (songs & clips) and put it up
with the MP3s to serve as an index.

No less serious than Kiss, methinks.  Certainly one of the more flamboyant of the glam rock groups,
but no less valid than many other sub-genres of rock when taken to an extreme.  Glam rock seems
to be a phase that a lot of rockers went through in the early '70s, particularly in Britain.  Bowie,
Eno, Elton John, Alice Cooper, even Lou Reed.

cannot wait for this -- were you in NYC in '83? Do you remember the brouhaha when WNEW-FM played that Otis Liggett tune? their listeners had a cow. I, of course, *love* that version, which some people thought was Stevie Wonder recording under a pseudonym.

agreed. And I always felt that in the case of the Dolls, these were guys who just wanted to rock and saw glam/crossdressing as a gimmick to get a foot in a record company door. Oh, and they thought chicks dug guys who wore eyeliner.

My second visit to 1973 (inspired by RGMike's comments):

 1. Beck, Bogert & Appice - Superstition
(Movie: Badlands)
 2. Doug Sahm - (Is Anybody Going To) San Antone
 3. Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee - People Get Ready (ggould, this one's for you!)
(TV: Julie (Andrews) on Sesame Street)
 4. Carpenters - Sing
 5. John Prine - Dear Abby
 6. Donny Hathaway - Love, Love, Love
(TV: Kojak)
 7. Kinky Friedman - Sold American
 8. New York Dolls - Looking For A Kiss
 9. Kevin Johnson - Rock 'N Roll (I Gave You the Best Years of My Life)
(News: Bruce Lee's funeral)
10. Fred Wesley and the JB's - Doing It To Death

https://soundcloud.com/retrocapnjack/25-10-10-1973

FYI, there's a third '73 installment ready to go.  Enjoy!

It could be just because this set is right in the center of when my musical tastes were starting to develop, but this may be my favorite of all your efforts so far. This one has just about everything--good clips, a great mix of songs from a number of genres; some I remember and ones I don't but scream out '73 nonetheless.  Particular props for the Doug Sahm, Dolls, and JB's tunes, but everything was great. Dave would approve.

By the way, where did you find that version of Doing it to Death? I have a 6-minute edit of that on a JB comp that I've had for years, but they stretch out way more on this one. Never got to see the JBs, but I am so happy to have seen James a couple of times while he was still active and touring.

I think there's a bit of tongue in cheek to their act, but you could say that about most of David Johansen's career (Buster Poindexter being the most over-the-top of the lot). But I think they were serious too. And the Ramones obviously copped a good bit of their schtick from the Dolls, just updating it from glam to their own thing, which became punk.

Okay, here is my 1963 set:

Puff the magic. Drag ON!

Another stellar set.  It occured to me during RR's intro that she mentioned Icky, and I haven't heard his name on KFOG in months. But Tim & Greg have a female producer now who calls herself "Mud".

that Cronkite/JFK interview was awesome.

Wasn't planning on posting this so soon, but...

My 1985 set:

 1. Madonna - Into The Groove
(TV: Moonlighting)
 2. Katrina and the Waves - Do You Want Crying
(News: Rock Hudson)
 3. Sade - Your Love Is King
(Commercial: McDonald's "Dancin'")
 4. Jean Knight - My Toot Toot / Denise LaSalle - My Tu-Tu
(Commercial: Sizzlean)
 5. Robey - One Night In Bangkok
 6. Paul Hardcastle - 19
(News: Margaret Thatcher - shopkeeper's daughter)
 7. The Style Council - The Lodgers (Or She Was Only A Shopkeeper's Daughter)
(News: Margaret Thatcher on socialism)
 8. Fine Young Cannibals - Blue (LP version)
(News: Margaret Thatcher on compassion)
 9. Billy Bragg - Between The Wars
(News: Celebrities against apartheid)
10. Artists United Against Apartheid - Sun City

https://soundcloud.com/retrocapnjack/28-10-10-1985

Excuse the sloppy editing in the Jean Knight/Denise LaSalle medley -- I couldn't sync the two up smoothly. Enjoy!

Did it?  I seem to remember requesting it many times to no avail...and it's not coming up in the search.

You may be right, I went and looked at the 1985 sets (boy are there a lot of them!), and I don't see it. Now I'm trying to think of the context that I did hear it.
