10@10 Annual Recap
« on: January 28, 2005, 03:10:14 PM »
So just in case you were wondering (I'm sure at least some of you have been):

In 2004 we heard 261 separate 10@10 sets. Of those, 30 were "classics" and 43 were theme sets. I counted Vertical Tastings (of which there were five) in as theme sets, since they're sort of a hybrid, and not specific to a single year. There were three Soul Patrols, one of which was also a Vertical Tasting from 65 to 74.

There were several sets that were counted as both theme sets and year-specific, which accounts for the total shown below being 6 greater than the actual number of sets we heard: the 1971 Soul Patrol, the 1969 Moon Landing, the 1968 Democratic Convention, and three Republican Convention sets for 1968, 1972 and 1980.

Of the 230 year-specific sets (classics included), we visited 1976 most frequently: 12 times. This number surprised me--I would have guessed we'd hit 1982 most often. The least-visited years were, not surprisingly, the oldest and newest ones: 1965 and 1995, at once each. However, just the fact that we went to 1965 at all, and hit 1966 twice were the biggest surprises of the year, since we hadn't been back beyond 1967 in at least five years.

By the way, these numbers do not include the ten sets that were played on Oct. 10. As they all seemed to be classics, they were completely outside the normal routine of 10@10, and the "Ten 10@10s for 10/10" promotion isn't something that they do every year, I felt they would unfairly affect the results.

Here's the numbers, year by year:

1965   1
1966   2
1967   3

Also, I have partial numbers for 2003 (May thru Dec) that I didn't get around to compiling until just recently. If there's any interest, I can post those as well.
Let's get right to it.

Nice work, Urth, and much appreciated.  Other than the 12 visits to '76, note the double digit totals for '78 thru '85. That's no surprise, but it really drops off after that ('85: 10; '86: 5).  Be interesting to see how (if) that changes significantly this year.  Folks who were, say, 15 in 1985 are turning 35 in 2005.

I love it!  Statistical evidence for the (temporary) banning of 1989 from the wheel!  Wouldn't have expected a standard bell curve, but there you have it.

what format is your data in?  I want all the set lists going back to the last part of 2003 that you have, just so I can monkey around with it.

10@10 Annual Recap

Hi all, once again it’s time for our favorite obsessive-compulsive game show, the 10@10 Annual Recap for 2005. And now, here’s your host, Urthwerm Jim!

Ahem....

In the past year, we were treated to 256 separate sets: 222 year-based sets and 36 theme sets. (There were two year-specific Soul Patrol sets that were counted in both categories, which is why the total reflected below is 258.) There were 30 “classic” sets, exactly the same number as last year, and four separate Vertical Tastings (one of which, the Live from the Archives VT, was counted both as a new set, and as two classics, since it got repeated on both Thanksgiving and the day after, thanks to a computer screw-up.)

Of the year-based sets (classics included), there was a tie for the most popular year between 1974 (big shock!--a pickup of three visits over '04) and 1983 (no shock at all, and the same number as '04); both of these were visited 11 times. (Last year’s most-frequented year was 1976 with 12, so we were off one from that mark.) The least-visited years were 1966, 1967, and 1996 with one apiece, but we hit 1965 twice, and perhaps more significantly, 1968 got a whopping NINE visits—up two from last year. Also, as I surmised a few weeks ago, the early '70s years were mostly off from last year—1970 picked up a couple, from a paltry 5 in 2004 to 7 in 2005; but 1971 through 1973 were uniformly down. Overall, the frequency of the more-popular years was a bit more evenly distributed, with the bulge in our bell curve stretching from 1974 through 1989; last year there was a much more pronounced drop-off after 1985.

Under the heading of theme sets, we got a lot of the usual suspects (MLK, Valentines Day, Tax Day, Turkeys, and so forth), but we also skipped a few of the ones we’re used to hearing: this year there were no sets for April Fools Day, Wing Ding (not that I’m complaining); Ka Boom (ditto); and most significantly, no Foghead Xmas Card. On the other hand, there were three Soul Patrols and three Strictly Instrumentals, so take that as you will. I'm taking that as a positive.

Here’s the year-by-year counts:

1965   2
1966   1
1967   1
1968   9
1969   7
1970   7
1971   7
1972   6
1973   7
1974   11
1975   8
1976   9
1977   10
1978   10
1979   9
1980   9
1981   10
1982   10
1983   11
1984   9
1985   9
1986   9
1987   8
1988   8
1989   8
1990   6
1991   6
1992   4
1993   4
1994   3
1995   3
1996   1
Theme   36
Total   258

Classic: 30

Theme sets:  Elvis' 70th B-day; MLK Birthday; Vertical tasting 70-79; 73 Soul Patrol; Valentines Day; 10@10 Goes to the Movies; Vertical tasting 71-80; Irish bands-St. Patricks Day; Strictly Instrumental (three times); The President's iPod; Tax Day; Earthquake Day; Earth Day; Cinco de Mayo; Hits from Hell; 1975 Soul Patrol; Dylan's birthday; Motor City Revue; Summer; Gay Pride; SF Birthday; The Sound of Brass; Vertical tasting 74-83; Local music; New Orleans music; Folsom St. Fair; Freak-out!!; Time (turn the clocks back); Halloween; Soul Patrol; Vertical tasting-Live from the Archives; Turkeys.

(If anyone wants to see my data, just holler. I'd be more than happy to share my Excel file with anyone in the group. And don't hesitate to point out any statistical flubs--I was a journalism major, not accounting, so I'd not be surprised if I forgot to figure in a cosine somewhere or something.)
Let's get right to it.

WOW! You totally rule. KFOG should hire you as a consultant to statistically analyze/recommend what years to play to reach whatever their target demo of the moment is.

You should send it to Dave. Wonder if he randomly picks years based on mood or if he has a method. Tell us if you find out.
