Great Jon Carroll column in praise of Rachel Maddow. As if I didn't love her already, she hates Coldplay! Swoon!

"Former Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge says pressure from fellow Cabinet members to raise the nation's terror alert level just before the 2004 presidential election helped convince him it was time to quit working for President George W. Bush."

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/n/a/2009/08/20/national/w145557D14.DTL&tsp=1

it seemed obvious at the time, didn't it?

indeed, talk about a big "DUH!"  Olbermann did an "I wish I wasn't saying 'I told you so', but... 'I told you so'!" rant about it.

Food for thought, from a poster on a political thread at hollywood-elsewhere.com:

Quote
What we are starting to see is the germination of Fascism in this country. The Elites feel they need to do whatever they can to hold on to their power, and what better way than to rile up the working class, the downtrodden, the gun nuts, the religious fringe. This has nothing to do with health care. Once this whole health care thing blows over it will be something else, and on and on, one thing after the next, until the thugs literally take to the streets, armed, and try and take back control of this country. This is all about religion and race and returning this nation to some so-called idyllic myth that only exists in movies and novels, not that the cretins can tell the difference. As a white, middle-class Jewish man, the many, many hairs on the back of my neck are starting to tingle a little bit. Not everything is theatre and spectacle. Sometimes the rage is real and it can tip over and spill all over everything. I hope I'm just being paranoid and fanciful, but I feel like something bad is about to happen in America, and it has nothing to with current events or bills that need to be passed. It has to do with something under the surface that is quickly rising to the top. Someone tell me I am an idiot and that nothing is going to happen. This is one of those times when I wouldn't mind being told I'm wrong.

KO's great take-down last nite of United Health Group. I used to work for them -- glad I no longer do.

I've been dwelling on this notion a bit lately.  The true test will be what happens when, inevitably, some lone nut attempts to make a martyr of himself - whether he's vilified or celebrated by the right wing will tell us whether larger pockets of angry whites will attempt full-on insurrection.

More right-wing pastoral threats.  Left-wing Christians really ought to stand up and denounce this kind of shit:

"Pastor" Anderson is an inspiration to gun-toting right-wingers!  Sorry, Geoff et al, but these nuts have become the face of American Christianity.

I must say that I didn't even have the stomach to read that, but it occurs that it is easy to refute.  I've only had close personal friendships with two young women who were victims of violent rape* but each had several relationships with women subsequently, not men.  It is likely that my brother was molested by an older male teenager when he was 14 & he remains the most homo-phobic person in my family (but since we're mostly a bunch of homophiles...it is only by degree, he is basically tolerant).  This is one of the most ridiculous claims that can be made.  It has long since been demonstrated beyond statitstical doubt that violence begets violence, not gender reorientataion.

*Spoiler alert: the rest won't be pleasant reading.

Of the two mentioned above, one was a very close friend, abducted by two guys, thrown into a car and they both had their way before dumping her out of the car in the middle of nowhere in a torrential downpour.

The other was a grad school classmate that I rather liked.  She was the final victim of a serial rapist who was a mental patient recently released because of budget cuts in WA State.  His MO was such that all she knows is she went to sleep in her bed and was awakened with a cloth pressed over her eyes and a knife at her throat.  The rest followed as you can imagine (& this was in the days before DNA evidence.)  Fortunately he kept his next appointment with his parole officer & said PO determined enough inconsistencies in his story that eventually they got a confession from him.

Here's the kicker, and one of my most deeply suppressed memories: I had a date with this girl that very night, but I cancelled for some small reason that I couldn't remember then, nor have since.

What if...?

and BTW see Jon Carroll's column today; he also has that something-bad-might-happen feeling.

I'm not quite sure why you'd think I'd have a problem with this.  I organize music once a month at a predominantly LGBT church, and I detest those kind of so-called Christians (the right-wing nuts).  We have recently played U2's One, which is pretty in-your-face to that crowd

Quote from: U2
Have you come here for forgiveness
Have you come to raise the dead
Have you come here to play Jesus
To the lepers in your head

Did I ask too much
More than a lot
You gave me nothing
Now it's all I got
We're one
But we're not the same
Well we
Hurt each other
Then we do it again
You say
Love is a temple
Love a higher law
Love is a temple
Love the higher law
You ask me to enter
But then you make me crawl
And I can't be holding on
To what you got
When all you got is hurt
Don't stand in the way of LOVE!
