His films, like “Easy Rider,” "Five Easy Pieces," "The Last Picture Show," and "Hearts and Minds," helped define the discontent of the late 1960s and early '70s. But before that, he quit Screen Gems in 1965 to form Raybert Productions with Bob Rafelson. Together they created the Monkees 1966-68 TV show and made the 1968 film "Head" starring the Monkees and Jack Nicholson. The success of the Monkees provided the capital to finance "Easy Rider," the landmark 1969 film.
