So the Dickens fair is happening now (it's actually pretty fun, even though it's pretty much like the Renaissance Faire idea moved up a few centuries) and the Dickens nerds are big on the Cockney rhyming slang.
"He went up the pears" means "He went up the stairs" b/c someone got the idea to substitute "apples and pears" for the word "stairs", and then they shortened it to just "pears".
That's why it's called a "raspberry" when you make that sound with your tongue: in Cockney rhyme "raspberry tart" was used for "fart."
