The Autumn King on KPOO last nite was featuring The Pearl Sessions, that new Janis re-package. It was a nice reminder that there are a lot of wonderful tracks on that LP besides "Me & 'trina McGee" that never get played on the radio.
It was a wonderful album, which only served to make her passing all the more tragic.  She seemed at the height of her powers, and I'm not a Big Brother basher either.

I remember in Dec of '69 being overjoyed when WABC, the big Top 40 station in NYC, which was notoriously conservative and rarely went out on a limb for singles that weren't already charting, had "Kozmik Blues" in rotation for a few weeks (it ultimately peaked at #41 as a single). It's sad that aside from "McGee" and "Piece of My Heart" she gets little Classic Rock love, unlike Hendtrix, Morrison or SRV.

Discovery of the Week: talk about your '70s Cheeze -- the best/worst ABBA imitation evah. From '75, a Dutch group called Teach-In with "Ding-A-Dong".

NTM: something I just heard on Jazz-FM by a guy named Anthony David. Somewhat political lyric that goes down easy because the melody's so smooth-jazzy.

He is supposedly one of Obama's fave artists, FWIW.

So, in addition to Young the Giant, there's also a band called Jukebox the Ghost?

There's also one from Portland called "Portugal. The Man", complete with incidental punctuation. I don't get it, but they are pretty good.

I'm starting a band called Copy Editor, the Gaz.

:D

There's another growing trend in band nomenclature: The (blank) and the (blank). Often the two "blank" words are alliterative, like The Head and the Heart, or The Builder and the Butcher. Those are two I can think of off the top of my head, but I know there are others.

Don't forget Of Monsters & Men, whose "Little Talks" is annoying as fuck: I swear the first dozen timesI heard it I thought it was a duet between Florence Machine and the Mumford guy. And the song itself is cloned from Edward Sharpe's "Home". Reason 2,874 why radio sucks.

There's:

Young the Giant
Foster the People
Portugal. the Man
Cage the Elephant
Minus the Bear

Apparently, Minus the Bear & Portugal the Man have opened for Young the Giant.

Imagine if this trend had gotten hold earlier in rock history. We'd have bands like:

Led the Zeppelin
Strawberry the Alarmclock
Roxy the Music
Talking the Heads
R.E. the M.

and my favorite:

The the The
Let's get right to it.

Damnit, now I'm going to be thinking about this.

OK, who is it that the lead singer of Alabama Shakes sounds like? It's right on the tip of my tongue but I can't quite nail it. In any case, I'm not especially impressed by them. Black Crowes version 2.0 -- meh.

I like "Hold On."  I think it's pretty slick.

But I never expected the lead singer to look like:
