alt-country guy Robbie Fulks has released an album of J-5 & MJ covers. Available on Amazon as a download:

http://www.amazon.com/Happy/dp/B003CXR76W/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dmusic&qid=1271126743&sr=8-1

Heard his cover of "Mama's Pearl" on the Autumn King's oldies show on KPOO Sun nite -- just a delight.  Can't wait to hear the rest.

Not new, but NTM: the Sugar Shoppe, aka "Canada's answer to the Mamas & the Papas".  Thanks Larry Grogan for the tip; this sounds right up Gaz's alley:

From my wife:
Quote
Imagine being at the checkout at Whole Foods and there next to all the granola magazines is Imelda's face (with a parasol!) on a CD cover. David Byrne and Fatboy Slim sets the story of the Marcos' rise to power to 70's club music, sung by Nellie McKay, Martha Wainwright, Cyndi Lauper, Sharon Jones, Steve Earle, etc. Weird, right? Of course I bought it!

It's weird, and good:  http://www.davidbyrne.com/here_lies_love/index.php

In other news, I just bought a used version of Nil Lara's latest (ok, 2006) release Da, and it is *excellent*: http://www.amazon.com/Da-Nil-Lara/dp/B0002L57VY

Also bought his EP "My First Child" http://www.nillara.net/albums/my-first-child/

His self-titled album "Nil Lara" is highly recommended, as well:  http://www.nillara.net/albums/nil-lara/
(Live version of "I Will Be Free" was featured on KFOG Live From the Archives #4)

And on Sunday, at Starbucks (!) saw the new Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings on sale, so I bought it:

And yes, Mike's friend was right:

My FB-friend Rita Houston (music director at WFUV) is raving about the new Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings LP. "Its like they went from 'My Girl' to 'Ball of Confusion' ", sez she. Damn!

I can second the rec for Nil's self-titled album - amazing!!
Looking forward to hearing all of the new Sharon Jones.

Certainly not new, the remastered "Exile on Main St" debuts at #2 on Billboard Album chart:

in this week's Sports Illustrated "Pop Culture Grid", one of the questions (asked of 4 twentysomething jocks) was "Exile on Main Street is ___________" and only one said "an album from before my time". Two said it was "a play" and one basketball player thought it was a strip club.

Talk about a radical re-interpretation: soul legend Betty LaVette covers Ringo -- it really DON'T come easy!  I really like this.

from a new album of covers of rock classics she just released. She also does (among others) "Maybe I'm Amazed" and "Isn't it a Pity"

Hmmm...sits with me about as well as Johnny Cash covering Soundgarden, Nine Inch Nails, etc. Once was cute, but overkill lurked not far around the corner.

By the way, I heard this for the first time the other day:

Her album is apparently all covers of British invasion tunes.

She was on Wait Wait Don't Tell me a few weeks ago for "Not My Job" - great discussion of her moaning, and how she really only knew 7 of the 500 songs her husband picked because: "You know, when these songs were released, there was black radio and there was white radio and rarely did the twain meet."  She added, "You know, so all of these British artists, the inspiration for these songs were from black music, but nobody on white radio played them."

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=127214381

They played a bit of her rendition of "Love Reign Oe'r Me".  Video here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EJi6maTueSc&feature=player_embedded

And the kicker?  She's going to be opening for Robert Plant this summer.  :-}

New Pornographers, "Crash Years" - just heard it for the first time, just fell in love with it.  Neko Case's voice at its breeziest.
“The choir of children sing their song.  They've practiced all year long.  Ding dong.  Ding dong.  Ding dong.”

I'm totally in love with this new band, Best Coast.  Their sound is a mixture of girl group, surf pop and garage rock.  What's not to love?  Their debut album is coming out on July 27th.  Here's a sizzample (and cute video):
