20 Sept 2011: it's... 1985 (again)
« on: September 19, 2011, 05:49:22 PM »
But at least AL is soliciting suggestions.  I'm at an all-day off-site conference tomorrow, so no 10@10s for me (which means one of my requests will probably make the cut).
You spin me right 'round, baby, right 'round

I requested Scritti Politti and my beloved Strawberry Switchblade  ("Scabby witches from Scotland", said Star Hits mag at the time.  Of course, that made me buy the album right there!)

I dunno where to begin with this one: someone on FB posted this

Quote
PLEASE DO NOT PLAY 'Do they know it's Christmas' or 'We are the World'!!! (Or any remake of Bang a Gong other than Bowie's - and course the original by Mott the Hoople.)

Ok, dude, "Bang a Gong" was T.Rex. but then he follows up with

Quote
How about Guadalcanal Diaries 'Watusi Rodeo'
(sorry, dude, wrong year -- that was '83)
Quote
Georgia Satellites 'Keep Your Hands to Yourself'
(wrong year again -- that was '86) ... and then he tops it off with

Quote
and that great duet of Bowie and Jagger in their remake of 'Dancin' in the Streets'. (I'm usually not big on covers/remakes but this has the double advantage of having Mick with a much earlier release and the sheer fact that it's Bowie and Jagger!)
-- making him the only person on EARTH who likes the Bowie/Jagger "DITS" cover.

I'm exhausted.

I have to admit that I laughed, but thanks for the backup!

Decent leadoff song, if that's what it was.

Prince, "pop life". Glad it's not little red corvette.

Into some SRV chameleon blues. Could be any decade from 1950s to today. If she's going to play blues, why not in an earlier set and someone other than SRV?

You Spin Me always makes me think of my rare forays into the NYC club scene back then.  I remember dancing to this at Tunnel and some club in the East Village, where I *think* the Fillmore East used to be.

Pop Life is pretty cool.  What is that crowd scene noise from?  it's set apart in a way that makes it seem fairly notorious.

I saw SRV in this year, so VHM!

I like that Weird Al sampled "Pop Life" in "Hardware Store".

All She Wants To Do Is...   :'(

I dislike Don Henley except maybe for Dirty Laundry. Also, the Eagles suck!

Sorry for the negativity.. I'll try to cheer up.

believe it or not, SRV's strat-blues were a unique turn of events back then, given the other stuff on the scene ... like this Don Henley.
His appearance on David Bowie's Let's Dance album gave him some modern rock cred, too.

I could be convinced.

BOS Prince and Thompson Twins.  Gawd, I had the biggest crush on Tom Bailey.
