The Drive, week of 8/22/11
« on: August 22, 2011, 07:52:08 AM »
Mon 8/22/11: 1972

but before the set we get the godawful "Magic Power" by Triumph -- third time in 2 weeks I've heard this POS, which is neither magical nor powerful.

The Drive's "live chat" feature is no longer accessable to just anyone: you must join their "Listener Advisory Board" (kinda like being a Registered Foghead) and log in to chat.  Thanks, I'll pass.

Neil starts the set with a 'Trina of Gold; Iggles meet a woman who rhymes with bitchy. And here come all the young 'trinas.

Holee crap: I don't think I've EVER heard "Lazy" by Deep Purple on the radio before. BOSFRA.  I think DC would have a coronary if AL played this.

VHM and proxy of shray, the Mondegreenin' Moodies. "so many people, really diseased".

I've always preferred the Byrds' version of "Jesus is Just All Right" but now it seems the Doobs cover is the only one you ever hear.

uber-BOS2 Jimmy Cliff, "Sitting Here in Limbo".  Ziggy plays gee-tah with his god-given ass! or something.

OMFG -- Bob plays Gilbert O!  BOS3 just because. Shame his catalog is out-of-print.

Look out, Stevie -- ladder 'bout to fall.

Neil Young - Heart of Gold
Eagles - Witchy Woman
Mott the Hoople - All the Young Dudes
Deep Purple - Lazy
Moody Blues - I'm Just a Singer in a Rock & Roll Band
Doobie Brothers - Jesus is Just Alright
Jimmy Cliff - Sitting Here in Limbo
David Bowie - Ziggy Stardust
Gilbert O'Sullivan - Alone Again Naturally
Stevie Wonder - Superstition

yeesh -- taking a pass on this one. I shudder to think what Bob might play.

Traveling Wilburys   End of the Line   33.9%
Cheap Trick    The Flame   9.3%
David Lee Roth    Just Like Paradise   3.2%
U2   Desire   7.0%
Joan Jett   I Hate Myself For Loving You   7.7%
Guns n' Roses   Patience    5.1%
Beach Boys   Kokomo   13.4%
Robert Plant    Ship of Fools   9.3%
Poison   Nothin' But a Good Time   6.1%
Elton John    I Don't Wanna Go On With You Like That

wow -- except for the unspeakable Wilburys, Cheap Trick and Beach Boys tunes, that's not completely terrible. BOS Joan Jett and EJ.

ELO's woman is evil. As a wet hen, honey!

VHM "Love Hurts", followed by BTO's "Roll On Down the Highway"

unnecessary: 10cc. Big boys don't cry, but I might.

Duuuuude! Rainbow's on a silvah MOUN-tayn.

BadCo feel like makin' lurve.  I'd lurve to hear Millie Jackson's cover version.
BOS Seger, "Beautiful Loser"

Foggit!  VHM "Slow Ride"

OMGWTFLOL: "Thank GAWD ahm a Country Boy". BOS2 for cheeze factor alone. and kudos for playing the LP version and not the crappily-edited 45.

ELO - Evil Woman
Nazareth - Love Hurts
BTO - Roll on Down the Highway
10cc - I'm Not In Love
Rainbow - Man on the Silver Mountain
Bad Company - Feel Like Makin' Love
Bob Seger - Beautiful Loser
Foghat - Slow Ride
John Denver - Thank God I'm a Country Boy
Fleetwood Mac - Rhiannon

Thur 8/25/11: 1968

This may be one time that Bob's '68 is less obvious than AL's.

BOS1: Desmond does his pretty face. Life goes on, bra. Actually, life goes on *over* your bra. Any drag queen knows that.

Sly is everyday people. If everyday people do mountains of coke.

BOS2 "Hurdy Gurdy Man". Mr Leitch really *has* had a busy day.

Please allow Mick to introduce hisself. Wealth? Yes. Taste? Questionable.

first duplicate from yesterday: Otis.

wow: the Cryin' Shames cover of "Up on the Roof" is a nice only-in-ChiTown surprise. BOS3FRA

BOS4 BJT "Hooked on a Feeling".  Swoonworthy.

Jimi gets out of that traffic and climbs the "Watchtower". VHM.

Always a BOS(5) for Mr Masakela.

the 'oo get in the queue.

Beatles - Ob La Di Ob La Da
Sly and the Family Stone - Everyday People
Donovan - Hurdy Gurdy Man
Rolling Stones - Sympathy for the Devil
Otis Redding - Sitting on the Dock of the Bay
Cryan' Shames - Up on the Roof
BJ Thomas - Hooked on a Feeling
Jimi Hendrix - All Along the Watchtower
Hugh Masekela - Grazing in the Grass
Who - Magic Bus

seems like Bob does '76 twice a month.  Boz gives us the lowdown. Boston's just another band outta, uh, well...

"they... cannot... touch... her..." BOS Taxi Driver.

Rod the Bod lets his inhibitions run wild.

it is unnecessary to play anything from the "live" Wings LP, ever.

BOS2 "Crackerbox Palace"; WOS Kansas.

Bob's def been playing more pop & soul lately. BOS3 George Benson's masquerade.

oh that Manfred Mann: he's such a douche deuce.  And Inspector Clousseau wants a rheum room.  He's still the one!

AC/DC keep shouting "Oy! Oy!" I had no idea they were Jewish.

Boz Scaggs - Lowdown
Boston - Rock 'n Roll Band
Rod Stewart - Tonight's the Night
Paul McCartney - Live and Let Die (live)
George Harrison - Crackerbox Palace
Kansas - Carry on Wayward Son
George Benson - This Masquerade
Manfred Man - Blinded By the Light
Orleans - Still the One
AC/DC - T-N-T

What a great great flick. I worked in the neighborhood (B'way betw 61st & 66th) where the campaign headquarters scenes were filmed -- that building was torn down in the early '80s and they built a highrise with movie theaters on the ground floor.

I think I remember that theater.   West side of B'Way?  They showed My Beautiful Laundrette back in the day.  I was walking by w a friend and said something like "What do you think of the new gay cinema movement?" meaning the film and the subject matter.  He thought I meant the theater itself and said "Yes, there are a lot of gays who go here."   :D
