KPOO/KCDX etcetcetc for the week of 8/1/11
« on: August 01, 2011, 09:19:42 AM »
looking at the playlist for Peter Young's always-wonderful Jazz-FM show from this past weekend

http://www.jazzfm.com/playlist/30th-july-2011-6/

And I notice at the end of hour 3 there's Lesley Gore doing a medley of Keith's "98.6" and Spanky & Our Gang's "Lazy day"! WTF?

1340 unearths Shakin' Stevens (huge in the UK in the '80s, and unknown here) and his cover of "Green Door".

Atlantic2NG plays Cockney Rebel's "Come Up & See me", which makes me smile.

and now Jona Lewie's in the kitchen at a party.

OMGWTFLOL: the Partridge Family, "Point me in the Direction of Albequerque"!

Just heard this on The Boardwalk... For all the FYC haters who are (rightfully) sick of "Good Thing" and "She Drives me Cray-zay"... their 1996 UK hit that did nothing here (afaik): "The Flame" (not the Cheap Trick hit).

Retro Chart 7/31/71: holee crap, the first song played is Buffy Sainte-Marie's "Soldier Blue". I'm instantly gobsmacked.  CCR's Swedish-a Hy-kah is everywhere lately. But I love the way the Brits pronounce "Foggerty".

ooo! the Fascinations' fab "Girls Are Out To Get You" actually made the UK Top 40!  A Northern Soul classic.

ooo! again: Dylan's "Watching the River Flow".

Medicine Head (who?) doing "Pictures in the Sky". No matchstickmen involved. Followed by a Slade song that's NTM: "Get Down and Get With It"

a reggae-fied cover of "Pied Piper" is a delightful surprise, by Bob & Marcia Griffiths. -- yes, the same Marcia Griffiths who did "Electric Boogie".

Proxy of Dave Morey: John Kongos, steppin' on again.

Miss Ross' lovely "I'm Still Waiting" did nothing in the US, sadly. But it was a British #1.

I may have to YouTube some of those in a bit.  Always, um, intriguing to hear things that charted in the U.K. but not the U.S. in the '70s.

Blue Mink - "The Bana Man"?!
“The choir of children sing their song.  They've practiced all year long.  Ding dong.  Ding dong.  Ding dong.”

Blue Mink - "The Bana Man"?!

"Banner Man". Here's the chart if you care:

http://www.chartstats.com/chart.php?date=31%2F07%2F1971

coming up: Greyhound's orig (pre-3DN) "Black & White" and the New Seekers covering Delaney & Bonnie.

"Leap Up & Down and Wave Your Knickers in the Air" ?!?

OMFG! BOS the Move, "Tonight"

WTFLOL: Atomic Rooster!

Roosters & Greyhounds & Monkeys -- oh my!

this does NOT sound like the orig "Dog Named Boo" -- crappy re-recording to my ears.

OMFG: early Sweet, "Co-Co", is NTM.

wow, the UK hit on "Chirpy Cheep Cheep" was by Middle of the Road, not Mac & Katie Kissoon.

Unexpected TANC: after playing "What Are You Doing Sunday" by dawn on their '71 chart, 2NG spins "Summer Sand". Yeah, I'm a sucker for that faux-Brill Building thang.

Listening to last week's Little Steven show -- his annual "Dylan goes electric" tribute, including the great Al Kooper/Steven stills cover of "It takes a Lot to Laugh..."  proxy of geoff!

WTFLOL: Atomic Rooster!

heh, I might have this track somewhere.  I first heard their song called "Death Walks Behind You' on some internet station few years back and sought them out.

They are dark, dirge-y, mysterious and borderline hilarious.   :)
