the TANCs that happen here never cease to amaze me. Spooky.
Yeah, that was pretty spooky considering we were just talking about Henry Africa's!  Interesting article and even more interesting comments (as usual).  My friend's dad met his stepmom there.  They were regulars and always had great stories about that place.

Wow, I had no idea that the old guy with the oxygen tank in the recliner in the front of Eddie Rickenbacker's was Henry Africa. When I worked at CNET that was one of our two or three preferred watering holes (along with Zebulon and Kate O'Brien's). Kate's was my favorite of the bunch. Zeb's was invariably cacaphonous and Rickenbacker's always smelled of cat pee.
Let's get right to it.

...and Rickenbacker's always smelled of cat pee.

Well, cat pee notwithstanding, there's a historical marker in the works for Rickenbacker's as it was the location where my friendship with Gaz was born, back in the fall of '96.  The two of us plus one other had been in the same Schwab training class the preceding week, (Gaz: I can clearly picture our friend, and even quote some of the conversation, but somehow his name is escaping me.), and early into the 2nd round of beers Gaz saw fit to tell us that he was gay.  And to (I think) all three of our mutual admiration, no one gave a shit.
