TANC:   I was watching an ep from the original H50 series (season nine) last night, too. ("Nine Dragons," where Wo Fat tortures McGarrett in Hong Kong and brainwashes Steve.  Danno and Chin Ho fly over from Hawaii to bust some heads help out.)

I've watched a few eps only b/c I'm a fan of the orig and I'm curious to see if they keep connections with the classic series, but there's not much there in any case.   

Regarding a nemesis like Wo Fat: The first ep featured a Bad Guy that new McGarrett fights and then shoots.  Bad Guy falls into the Pacific, but they never recover his body, so he'll probably crop back up as the new Wo Fat.  He's not fat, though .. whoa!
