26 Aug 2010: it's... '70s chartbusters

Nothing on FB about it, but I just heard a promo on KFOG that said as much. I'm too lazy to look thru my Billboard chart book. Bed beckons.

AL finally posted and got some suggestions from folks unclear on the concept (Yeah, I love "Ballad of Lucy Jordan" too, but a chartbuster it def wasn't).  She's threatening to play the Floaters  ::)

Mungo Jerry TOTHK. Nice song, rarity factor is nil. But I never realized how much stereo separation there was in that track til now--one of my speakers was out, and was only getting half of the vocals, instruments etc.
Let's get right to it.

Catchin' up:

1971: Mr Big Stuff-Jean Knight
'72: Hold Your Head Up-Argent
'73: Loves Me Like A Rock--Paul Simon

Is this an "On this date" set? Seems like I recall hearing these songs on the radio around this time of year in their respective years.

And while I'm thinking of it: where the hell is everybody?
Let's get right to it.

been on a phone call with IT -- email probs. feel like I haven't missed anything of import, tho'.  Yeah it's date-specific, Chartbusters are supposed to be, per AL, so nothing rare expected.

ETA: but I'll BOS the Isleys, fightin' the power and all that BULL-bleep goin' down.

Scorpio, and my name is Sundaygal...
Float On - BOS!  That was my request for 1977.  Sorry RG, I assume full responsibility.    ;)

you're kidding -- a HUGE record. How could you have avoided it until now??  Kinda surprised Dave never played this, actually.

even more amazing: per the shraytabase, "Boogie Oogie Oogie" is a bustout too.

Dunno, somehow I managed. Or maybe just a bit too much Central Valley Brown dirtweed in my system back then and I lost any memory of it.

Hard to believe Dave didn't ever get Boogie Oogie Oogie into a set at some point--must have been outside the date range of the shraytabase.

Ending with....The Devil Went Down to Georgia? I thought that was more like '75 or '76.

ETA: Per Whitburn, I'm completely wrong. Cheese on the brain.

I hate not having a mono setting on my radios.  Seems that 'stereo separation' sometimes just meant "stick the drums over there, the vocals over here.."   like some Beatles stereo mixes.

Many years ago, my friend Dave* was on a road trip; at a rest stop, he bought a cassette to help him and his friend pass the time.  It was "One-Hit Wonders of the '70s," and it included "Float On."  D* found its absurdities absolutely sublime, and it's been a running gag between us ever since.

(Other songs on the tape included "Popcorn," "Love Is in the Air," and "Life Is a Rock."  I think it may have errantly included "Right Back Where We Started From" as well.)
“The choir of children sing their song.  They've practiced all year long.  Ding dong.  Ding dong.  Ding dong.”
