9 December 2009: it's 80s Chartbusters
« on: December 09, 2009, 10:05:01 AM »
And all entries were top 10 Cashbox hits (not Billboard). Much diff between the two?

It's Master Blaster (Jammin') representin' for 1980, btw. Nice TOTHK.
Let's get right to it.

not that much diff ... but since Cashbox no longer exists, AL can quote them without having to pay them (and Billboard is quite touchy about that -- dunno if KFOG was paying them a fee when Dave used their charts, but technically they shoulda been).

BOS1 Stevie.  Marley's hot on da box, mon.

this song is ripe for mondegreens

"Jammin until the break of Jah?"

although MJ beat him to it, I also think Stevie said he would "make a pack.."

BOS2 Rod the Bod and "Young Turks", one of his fab radio-friendly '80s singles.

BOS Rod Stewart and Young Turks!  I usually give Rod a lot of leeway.  Big fan.

The "chartbusters, dig?" dude has got to go.

HM for "Maneater", even though I couldn't stand H&O and their pun songs at the time.

I give Stevie the benefit, since "pact" is meant to rhyme with "fact".  in "I'll Be There", MJ (or the songwriter) makes "pack" rhyme with "back".

LAWD!  BOS3 H&O, ripping off that fab Motown bassline for "Maneater".  as a girl I knew said at the time, "Ewwww... maybe *they're* the maneaters!"

Whoa! Nice pick for '83. Culture Club, no? Checking for bustout status as we speak.

ETA: Bustout status negative. Been played three times previously, but the last time was Sept of 07.

I'll give a BOS for "Church of the Poison Mind".  Anybody know the woman singing backing vocals?

AL's bucking for a 10-way tie today: BOS5 Tina, "Bettah be Good to Me"!

I have this 45; the B-side, iirc, is her cover of the Animals' "When I was Young"

Agree on all points.

Now HERE'S a bona fide bustout: Tina, Better Be Good To Me. I played the hell out of this album back in the day. And probably not at all since then.

Btw, Tina has but one entry in the entire DB prior to this: one play of What's Love Got To Do With It? in early 2003. Gobsmacked, I am.
Let's get right to it.
