A neophyte Dead question
« on: May 25, 2005, 12:00:16 PM »
So I met this guy recently who's a huge Deadhead.  Bought Phil Lesh's autobio, has gone to dozens of shows, talks as obsessively about them as I sometimes do about Grace, Paul and Marty.  I went over to his apartment a few nights ago and he played a Dead album that absolutely floored me -- mostly gentle acoustic stuff, with gorgeous piano backings that I would have sworn were David Freiberg.  I didn't recognize any songs other than a cover of "If I Were a Carpenter" (one of the lesser tracks, actually).  I don't know if it was a mix tape or a real release, but the guy (who mumbles, to my chagrin) said something twice that sounded like "Marianne Faithful" when I asked him what album it was.  AMG didn't help me; do any of you (Geoff? Rod? Urth? Ali?) know what this might have been?

(He's coming over tonight, so the sooner the better for any response.  Grazie!)

well, there's nothing on deaddisc.com, which is pretty exhaustive.  But, what you may have been listening to is a CD called "For the Faithful" which is a repackaging of what was originally called "Reckoning" (get it?  Dead Reckoning).  Taken from live shows at the Warfield and Radio City Music Hall in 1980 i believe.  Check this link out:

http://arts.ucsc.edu:16080/gdead/agdl/discog2.html#reckoning

I was fortunate enough to see a few of those shows at the Warfield.  We were once so close for the first acoustic set, it felt like being in their living room.  It was actually too close for my wife, so we traded seats with her brother so he could be closeup for the electric sets.

mmmm, good.

Never date a guy who mumbles... wasn't there a Seinfeld ep on that subject?

Alas and alack, no "Carpenter," so I don't think that was it ... though perhaps it was a mix that included cuts from that.  (The only title I recognize in that set is "Ripple," which I definitely did not hear Saturday night.)  Thanks for checking on that.  Depending on what happens with him tonight when we go out, I may be asking more Dead questions soon.

(Seinfeld's foil was a "low talker," similar to a mumbler, but this guy isn't about to dress me in poofy pirate shirts.)

I pretty much concur with Geoff's guess, except I'm stumped by your mention of If I Were A Carpenter. I can't even think of what GD song might vaguely sound like that.

I saw one of those Warfield shows as well (my second GD show ever!) and it was the first time I "got it." A fabulous evening, even from high in the balcony (and you can take that however you please.) The acoustic set was most memorable--wish they'd done that sort of thing more often.
Let's get right to it.

When you finally get to the bottom of this, I imagine the GD didn't do "If I Were a Carpenter," so we'll all be standing by, waiting for the followup report.

Today's the 40th anniversary of the formation of the Grateful Dead and it's the 10th anniversary of Jerry's death.

KFRC actually played "Truckin" to commemorate the occasions.

Well, that's the last time I get my Dead trivia from Camy & Dean, that's fer sure!

Perhaps they meant that this YEAR is the 10th anniversary of Jerry's death. That must be what they meant- not the specific day. I thought that seemed a little too symetrical, y'know?

On Tuesday evening driving home, I was listening to KUFX, and Tim Jeffreys (formerly of the Bone) said the following TWICE, both before AND after playing "Knocking On Heaven's Door".

"Today is Bob Dylan's 67th birthday, born this day in Duluth Minnesota in 1941."

Yo Tim, 1941 + 67 = 2008.

ETA:  He had also made mention of it being Tommy Chong's birthday (who really did turn 67) and I almost called Tim up to say, "Is Tommy in the studio with you right now?"
"Music is the Earth, People are the Flowers, and I am the Hose."
