I can no longer use the joke I've been inflicting on friends for weeks:

Q: What are Michael Jackson and Farrah Fawcett getting for Christmas?

A: Patrick Swayze.

This wasn't unexpected. I had a friend who had pancreatic cancer and he lived about 8 months.

That's awful! But he's just in time for Rosh Hashanah.

Point Break

and Donnie Darko

I really wasn't a fan, but pancreatic cancer is a helluva way to go.

btw, Mike, the same director did Point Break & The Hurt Locker, Kathryn Bigelow.

indeed, and as much as I liked Hurt Locker, I found PB one of the more ridiculous movies of the '90s (tho' I know it has its cult).

Rod, your new avatar is making me see Swayze (whom I enjoyed in To Wong Foo and Donnie Darko but nothing else) in an entirely new light.  Now I know why you guys are always asking Mark to turn himself into Scarlett Johanssen.

RIP Dalton

Four or five years ago I won tix to see CSN on the 9:00 Pop Quiz, and it was on August 18th, because that was the birthday of three actors that KFOG gave you sound clips of (as well as my nephew Ian, which I mentioned on the air).  The first was Christian Slater & the second was Robert Redford, and then I flailed on the third.

Me: ...oh, I just had it.  He's that guy, made all those bad movies like Next of Kin, uhhh, can you give me a hint?
Dave: First initial is 'P'
Me (instantly): Patrick Swayze!
Dave: That's it! You win.  But what about Dirty Dancing, or Ghost?
Me: Umm, how about Red Dawn & Road House?
Dave (giving up):  Uhh, okay.  Can you stay on the line?

(sorry Rod!  And I hadn't seen Donnie Darko or To Wong Fu at that time)

I'm not saying Roadhouse is a "good" movie -- it's 80's trash, filled with gratuitous sex and violence, faux machismo, and corny dialogue.  And mullets.  Still, it works for me.  Kelly Lynch's hair is worth the price of admission (not to mention her scenes in the buff).  Plus, Jeff Healey has a role as leader of the house band, Sam Elliot shows up as the "master cooler", and Ben Gazzara is awesome as the evil rich bastard.

I watched it again, uncut, on demand for free a couple of weeks ago.  It loses a lot (of breasts, mostly) on broadcast.
