I could use a little more "Love & Happiness" in my life, how 'bout you all?

I was going to write "hear, here!" But I'm enjoying being a moody bastard these days. :) This too, shall pass.
Is that what the Moody Blues are calling themselves these days?  Big BOS for the Beach Boys.

Greg said that back in the day Lennon was asked if Ringo was the best drummer in the world, to which he allegedly replied, "He's not even the best drummer in the Beatles."

bwahahaha!

I should have bwahahahaha'd this, too.  We could have had another Jinx.

I've always liked this Sail On Sailor, never really knew why it didn't sound like typical Beach Boys.  Now I know, thanks to wikipedia, that "Blondie" Chaplin sang lead:

bwahahaha!  Hence my line about Seth McFarlane being "the biggest mediocre talent to become a millionaire since Ringo"

I think that must have been an early quote, because I later heard Elton John say in an interview about working with Lennon on "Whatever Gets You Through the Night" (which had Jim Keltner on drums) that when he asked Lennon if he realized how lucky they were to get Keltner, Lennon replied to the effect that he'd already spent 8 years with the best drummer in the world.

I'd bet his Plastic Ono experience made him realize what he'd been taking for granted.  "Instant Karma" has some horribly clunky drums.

No, I was going for a Walter Becker reference.

did you mean Seth Rogen?  I think Seth MacFarlane is a man of many talents.

"You are the sunshine of my life" could only have been a hit in the '70's That intro is way too groovy and complex for any other time zone.

I still don't understand why the trumpets during the verses were removed for the radio version.

i thought it was the other way around?

One version has trumpets (not only in the verses, it just occurred to me), and the other version doesn't. I'm pretty sure it's the album version has trumpets. I'll check after the set.

Confirmed: the album version has trumpets.

9/11/09 - FRIDAY!!  Good times in...1973!!!

   1.  O'Jay's - Love Train
   2.  Paul Simon - Loves Me Like a Rock
(Movie:  American Graffitti)
   3.  Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show - The Cover Of the Rolling Stone
   4.  Loggins & Messina - Your Mama Don't Dance
(TV:  Mary Tyler Moore Show)
   5.  Stevie Wonder - You Are the Sunshine
   6.  Lou Reed - Satellite of Love (BOS!)
   7.  Ringo Starr - Photograph
   8.  George Harrison - Give Me Love
   9.  Al Green - Love & Happiness
 10.  Beach Boys - Sail on Sailor

BONUS TRACK:  Led Zeppelin - The Crunge

7 of the 10 were Top 10 singles in Billboard (and 6 of those were Top 5). Shouldn't be hard to guess which 3 weren't.

they all sound like top 10 hits to me, except for Shine a Light on Love by Lou Reed.  Maybe add Dr Hook and L&M?

Lou Reed, Beach Boys and Al Green. In '73 we'd just moved from Sacto out to the SIerra foothills, and the only rock station I could get with any consistency was KFRC (the Big 610), so I heard a whole lot of the Top 40 that year. And those are the three songs I don't recall hearing much if at all.

Btw, I'm really bummed to say I missed this set in its entirety. Spent most of the day making "arrangements". Big drag, but gotta do it. (If any of you hadn't heard, my mother-in-law passed away on Wednesday. We're sad, but it's also a blessing. She will be missed, cantankerous broad that she was.)

sorry to hear that, Jim.  you had mentioned that things were tenuous, but I didn't know she had died.

Very sorry for the pain you're all going through right now.  I hope you are able to celebrate the finer and funner points of her life in the coming days.  Stay strong, sailor.
