I was thinking the same thing, except I think it doesn't really qualify as a remake since it was co-written by Patti.  I'm not sure of the chronology of the releases, and I'm too lazy to look it up.  But yeah, Patti owns this like Jimi owns "All Along the Watchtower".

I think you're right--it's Bowie. He covered it around the time of Young Americans, iirc.
