RIP Marie Olbermann (Keith's Mom)
« on: April 06, 2009, 06:55:40 PM »
His tribute to her at the end of his show tonite was just lovely.

I didn't know she was famous for being hit in the face by a foul ball thrown by (then-Yankee) Chuck Knoblauch in 2000.

How do you throw a foul ball?

He was throwing to first base and missed by a mile -- this was during a period when he kinda melted down. If "foul ball" is the wrong term my apologies.

I was teasing you, but by definition a foul ball is a ball hit by the bat which does not land in fair territory.  I actually remember that incident, though.  Chuck K's throw woudl be regarded as an Error, and it was a mighty embarrassing one.

"foul ball" sounds better than "erroneous ball"  ;)

if you haven't seen the clip of his tribute, it includes him interviewing her at the time -- he was working for FOX Sports (oh irony!) that year.

Indeed--she really had a way with a comeback.

Keith O: "But Mom, you're not playing second base for the Yankees."

His mom: "Not yet."
Let's get right to it.
