I have a cousin (she's in her 70s) who LURVED him when she was young.  I actually took her to see him on B'way 20 years ago when he was doing La Cage Aux Folles --  and he called in sick that night! We saw his understudy.

Hate that. We had that happen when we went to see Buck Owens in Bakersfield, when he was playing the Crystal Palace every Saturday (more or less). So we saw the band that was portraying the Buckaroos instead, but it wasn't nearly what we'd hoped for. (We did see him here in SF at Bimbo's a year or so later, but it wasn't the same.) Still, Bakersfield was kinda fun (to visit, wouldn't want to live there).
