It's the birthday of John Lennon, born on  this day in Liverpool (1940). His parents  separated when he was one. His mother came in and out of his life, and he was  raised by his aunt and uncle. But his mom taught him to play the banjo and they  listened to rock 'n' roll records together.
  Sixteen-year-old John started a band called the Quarrymen,  and when they were playing at a church fundraiser, Paul McCartney heard them  and came up to introduce himself. Soon, McCartney was part of the band, and the  two teenagers started writing songs together. When John's mother died in a car  crash a year later, he and Paul McCartney became even closer, because Paul's  mother had died from cancer less than two years earlier.
  In 1960, the group became the Silver Beatles, and soon, just  the Beatles, but it wasn't until 1962 that they ended up with the four band  members who would become the band as we know them: Lennon, McCartney, George  Harrison, and Ringo Starr.
  The Beatles became a sensation; 'Beatlemania'  swept across Europe and the United    States.
    When his son Sean was born in 1975, Lennon retired from  public life and spent five years staying home with his family. In November of  1980, he and his wife, Yoko, released an album called Double Fantasy, gave interviews, and considered touring again. But  on December 8th, he was shot outside his apartment by a 25-year-old  man named Mark David Chapman. Chapman was obsessed with J.D. Salinger's novel Catcher in the Rye, and claimed that he  thought of himself as Holden Caulfield, and that this would explain his actions  -- although he later admitted that Holden Caulfield would probably not have shot  someone.
  A few days after her husband's murder, Yoko Ono asked  for 10 minutes of silence to honor him, and people all over the world observed  the silence, including a crowd of more than 100,000 people in Central   Park. The area of Central Park  between 71st and 74th streets was designated  'Strawberry Fields,' a green space and peace garden in memory of John  Lennon.

here's some Beatles related stuff:

On Wednesday, October 14 from 7pm-9pm, Richie Unterberger will devote an entire evening to rare films of the Beatles from throughout their career at the Park Branch of the San Francisco Public Library at 1833 Page Street. This is in conjunction with his book The Unreleased Beatles: Music and Film. Admission is free.

Note that this is the last rare rock films event he'll be holding at the Park Branch for about a year, as the library will be closed for renovation for around a year starting at the end of October.

He's also doing these other events of rare rock films elsewhere in the Bay Area later in October:

On Saturday, October 17 from 1pm-2:30pm at the Willow Glen Branch Library at 1157 Minnesota Avenue in San Jose, in honor of the 40th anniversary of the Woodstock festival, he'll be showing rare clips from the era of performers at that event. Included will be footage of Santana, Jefferson Airplane, Janis Joplin, Sly & the Family Stone, the Who, Country Joe & the Fish, Richie Havens, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Jimi Hendrix, Sha Na Na, Melanie, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Joan Baez, John Sebastian, and others. Admission is free.

On Wednesday, October 21 from 7pm-8:30pm, he'll be discussing White Light/White Heat: The Velvet Underground Day-By-Day at the Saratoga Library at 13650 Saratoga Avenue in Saratoga. Rare audiovisual material from throughout the Velvet Underground's career will be featured, and signed copies of the book will be available for purchase. Admission is free.

On Thursday, October 22 from 7pm-8:30pm, he'll again be discussing White Light/White Heat: The Velvet Underground Day-By-Day, this time at the El Cerrito Library at 6510 Stockton Avenue in El Cerrito. Rare audiovisual material from throughout the Velvet Underground's career will likewise be featured, and signed copies of the book will be available for purchase. Admission is free.

"The Lost Weekend" occurred during most of 1974, before Sean was born, when Yoko had kicked him out and he went to L.A. with May Pang (with Yoko's blessing). In L.A. he hung out with Harry Nilsson, Ringo, Keith Moon, and others, often acting like frat boys.  During that time he recorded the albums Walls & Bridges and Rock & Roll.  After Sean was born 10/9/75, and he got his green card in '76, he stayed at home in the Dakota to help raise Sean, bake bread, and take time-off from being a rock star.  In 1980 he was again inspired to write and record music, the results appeared on Double Fantasy and subsequent releases.

shray used the term "lost weekend," not Garrison Keillor.  Keillor had his own lost weekend when he retired Prairie Home Companion to do other stuff -- what that other stuff was no one recalls, which is why he brought back Companion.
