KFOG was doing the story about the medical marijuana dispensary in SF's Sunset district this morning. The supervisor from that district is feeling the heat from residents who don't want the pot store, and Peter Finch had a clip of that supervisor's aide -- Cammy Blackstone, yes, the same Cammy Blackstone who used to do mornings on KFRC!
Can't let them crazy potheads come out here in the fogland!
Don't stand in the way of LOVE!

Heads-up for those near a radio or computer tonite: KPOO's Monday nite oldies guy is doing a 3-hour Stax/Volt show. Needless to say, not the same old tunes you usually hear, but lots of rarities, B-sides etc. Should be great. 8:30-11:30pm.

Vote early, vote often: the Bay Area Radio Hall of Fame has its annual ballot up and running -- vote for Dave Morey in the "Announcer" category!

Can someone suggest worthy candidates in the other categories as well?

Bill Ruck in the engineering category, Barbara Taylor (KCBS) in news, Mike Pechner in Specialty, Jon Miller in Sports. No suggestions in the owner or Pioneer categories.

Miller wins Ford C. Frick Award

Giants radio voice Jon Miller was named the winner of this year's Ford C. Frick Award, and will be honored at the Hall of Fame ceremonies later this month.

Precious little about this on the Giants' site, and even less on the Chron's. Booo.

Morey update
« Reply #577 on: July 25, 2010, 12:08:53 AM »
In this week's Radio Waves column, Ben F-T gives a few tidbits about what Dave's been up to since his retirement.

Quote
Morey in Michigan: Dave Morey, retired from his KFOG morning show since late 2008, is being heard again in the Bay Area - on a commercial, anyway. Listen for spots for the Academy of Sciences. Morey charged nothing but did get "a bag of Peet's beans and some great swag." He's also mulling a pro bono assignment to voice the announcements played on public address systems after tests of the Emergency Alert Sirens. "The dream gig," Morey enthuses. "To be the voice telling San Francisco: 'Hey. It's OK. It was only a test.' " Morey was approached by a station (not KFOG) to be its imaging voice, but declined. He gets his radio fix by appearing on "WTF," a freewheeling pirate operation near his home in Harrisville, Mich. "It's the most listenable radio I've heard in decades," he says.

WTF is not online, which is too bad. It's a wildly free-form affair, with a radio-savvy wit. On "The Alconite Hour" (Harrisville is in Alcona County), an announcer advises: "If you have difficulty receiving this program, we advise that you move your receiver closer to the Harrisville area."

Apparently Dave's no longer concerned about his stalker, as Ben reveals the town he's living near. And also delivers a few teasers about WTF's programming. Guess he's intent on keeping it for locals only. Bummer.
Let's get right to it.

True Oldies Channel (KFRC 1550 AM) is stealing a page from Bob Shannon's book and doing a "First & Foremost" Weekend -- meaning they play an artist's first hit followed by his/her biggest hit.  Examples:

Chuck Berry: first -- the great "Maybelline"; biggest -- Yes, "My Ding-A-Ling"

Dr Hook: first -- the Shel Silverstein mini-masterpiece "Sylvia's Mother"; biggest -- the execrable BeeGees ripoff "Sexy Eyes"

Could be interesting listening.

TANC: both Casey K and Barry Scott subjected me to "Better Love Next Time" today.  Barry said "a Lost 45 from Dr Hook -- thay had a LOT of 'em", and I immediately thought "yeah, because nobody wants to hear Ray Sawyer's voice ever again!"

this is sort of radio related: Got a call at home to participate in an anonymous survey about radio listening habits.  They asked me to name five stations I listenofo the most, so I started on the left of the dial.  I said

"KQED -- eighty-eight point five."

"Ok, got it. next?"

"KPOO, 89.5.."

"hmm, that's not on my list. I can put that under 'other.'"

"dang, so they won't get any credit for my listening to them..?"

"yeah, I don't know that station b/c we're not a local marketing firm, and we got this list from somewhere else, so the
best i can do is say 'other.'"

"that's too bad....  ok, so my next one is KUSF, 90.3"

"Hmm, not on my list either."

then they asked me to say how likely I was to listen to this group or that group, and they were all large commercial major airplay acts, so if it wasn't apparently before then, I knew I was dealing with a corporate radio survey.

Queen guitarist Brian May on Fresh Air with Terri Gross, airing now on KALW 91.7.

PhD in astrophysics, author (of this book > http://www.amazon.com/Village-Lost-Found-Brian-May/dp/0711230390), awesome hair.  He's a legend.  His guitar was made from a fireplace mantlepiece, the wood baked for decades above the fireplace and gave his guitar a tremendous resonance.

Wow, I knew some of that about the guitar, but not about his Ph.D. or authorship. Very cool.

And the guitar was not just built from a mantlepiece by anyone. He built it from a mantlepiece. Himself, with his father's help.

Bad news for the 'Pig
« Reply #584 on: August 11, 2010, 11:28:43 AM »
Sounds like the bay area frequency of KPIG may have gone away:

From Big Rick's FB status:
Quote from: Big Rick
Bummer I liked having The Pig at the end of the am dial. From Inside Radio: It’s one of America’s quirkiest radio brands with a sizeable online audience. But Mapleton Communication wasn’t able to make KPIG, San Francisco (1510) profitable. “At the end of the day we came up short,” market manager Ed Monroe tells listeners.
