BOS to "Family Affair," which is all too appropriate today: I just had a very awkward phone conversation (during the KBCO set) with my brother, with whom I don't have the most friendly of relationships.   :-\

Havens, Van, and now the Stones--def. sounds like '71 to me!
and Jimi seals it (tho' he was gone by then)

I happened to think that he died around this time of year. Yep--the 38th anniversary of his death is a week from today.
Let's get right to it.

early BOS to Sistah Havens; I'm reading his autobio at the moment.
Is he out in it?

Not so far. I suspect not -- it's a 10-year-old book (at least) and I think we'd've heard something sooner if he'd revealed himself.

Tom Clay time, I remember being away at camp early Aug 71, and we'd all gather 'round the transistor radio mezmerized by this record.

It's NTM, but I don't really understand why the old events of the 60s are captured in it.  Weird.

This was all over the radio the summer of '71. And is an obvious forerunner of some of Dave's audio montages (Think Time Has Come Today megamix.

And here's the Wikipedia take on the song:

The events of the '60's weren't that old in '71, the Vietnam War and civil strife still raged on.

This reminds me of that clip with Chevy Chase doing word association with Richard Pryor.  THAT'S funny.

Indeed, the first time I heard this was one of the great music-related "WTF?" moments of my life.  I loved it, tho' over time there was a lot of discussion of whether it was maudlin/exploitative and whether Top 40 stations should even be playing it alongside Donny Osmond and Rare Earth.
