a Nelson Mandela/Anti-Apartheid set?
« on: July 11, 2008, 10:34:13 AM »
Thought this deserved it's own thread.

Here are the lyrics to Latin Quarter's "No Rope As Long As Time" with some annotations.

"Old Afrikaner farmer on the terrace of his home
Sits gently in his rocking chair, gazing at this land he owns.
There he sees his memories and there his past
There he smiles his grim smile, strokes his gun, swears he'll make it last.

Someone brings the whisky, someone serves the meal
Like the someone in the township, in the mine and in the fields.
Someone at the graveyard, someone with their tears
Someone who can't forget the freedom lost these 100 years.

Old man, you can boast about the gun that's by your bed
Old man, you can tell me how you're good for all your kaffirs yet
And your guns can fire, and your prisons fill
And you've yards of rope for hanging still
But your guns can shoot and never hit the sky
And there's no rope as long as time.

Mandela in the prison, Biko in the ground
Sharpeville and Soweto voices silenced till the end of time.
Freedom don't come easy, don't come bloodless, don't come fast
But in the hearts of the countless people
No Pass Law's gonna stop this pass.

Sometimes he'll talk of reasons, economy and cause
Sometimes he'll even talk of changes
Though he clasps the gun and talks of laws.
But power ain't this old man's gift
And freedom's no reform
The old man made the history and the history's made of wars."

Here are the lyrics to Johnny Clegg's "Asimbonanga", mostly sung in Zulu, with English translations in parenthesis.

Asimbonanga  (We have not seen him)
Asimbonang' uMandela thina  (We have not seen Mandela)
Laph'ekhona  (In the place where he is)
Laph'ehleli khona  (In the place where he is kept)

Oh the sea is cold and the sky is grey
Look across the Island into the Bay
We are all islands till comes the day
We cross the burning water

Chorus....

A seagull wings across the sea
Broken silence is what I dream
Who has the words to close the distance
Between you and me

Chorus....

Steven Biko
Asimbonanga  (We have not seen him)
Asimbonang 'umfowethu thina  (we have not seen our brother)
Laph'ekhona  (In the place where he is)
Laph'wafela khona  (In the place where he died)

Victoria Mxenge
Asimbonanga  (We have not seen him)
Asimbonang 'umtatewethu thina  (we have not seen our sister)
Laph'ekhona  (In the place where she is)
Laph'wafela khona  (In the place where she died)

Neil Aggett
Asimbonanga  (We have not seen him)
Asimbonang 'umfowethu thina  (we have not seen our brother)
Laph'ekhona  (In the place where he is)
Laph'wafela khona  (In the place where he died)

Hey wena  (Hey you!)
Hey wena  (Hey you!)
Hey wena  (Hey you!)
Hey wena nawe  (Hey you and you as well)
Siyofika nini la' siyakhona  (When will we arrive at our destination)
la' siyakhona  (at our destination)

Here's the rundown of that mixtape (one side of a C-90):

"(Ain't Gonna Play) Sun City", AUAA
"Free Nelson Mandela", Special AKA
"Bring Him Back Home", Hugh Masakela
"Wind of Change", Robert Wyatt (he's best known in the US for a cover of Costello's "Shipbuilding")
"Scatterlings of Africa", Johnny Clegg
"Under African Skies" and "Homeless", Paul Simon
"(Something Inside) So Strong", Labi Siffre (a beautiful and powerful anthem that's been covered by dozens of people -- even Kenny Rogers! --since 1988)
"Gimme Hope Jo'Anna", Eddy Grant (a Top 10 UK hit that sadly did nothing over here)
"It's Wrong (Apartheid)", Stevie Wonder

The other side of that cassette was a dub of The Indestructable Beat of Soweto, a 1985 South African anthology that Simon cites as an inspiration for Graceland (it introduced him to Ladysmith Black Mambazo, for one thing). A very enjoyable LP, considering not a word of it is in English.

If Dave goes for this suggestion, he'll certainly be compelled to mix in familiar "freedom" tunes like "People Gotta Be Free", "Stand", etc.  I wouldn't be surprised (or upset) if we got "Pata Pata".

That's a great list, a couple of those I'll have to check out for myself.

I've got Indestructable Beat..., great compilation.  If you can ever find it, there's a similar one called Rhythm of Resistance.  I used to have it but someone stole it.

"(Something Inside) So Strong", Labi Siffre (a beautiful and powerful anthem that's been covered by dozens of people -- even Kenny Rogers! --since 1988)

I saw a presentation on him at this year's EMP Pop Conference.  Remarkable person, and I made a note to myself to seek out his work after vacation - then promptly forgot as the world took over.

every Gay Men's Chorus should have "So Strong" in its repertoire.

Quote
The higher you build your barriers
The taller I become
The further you take my rights away
The faster I will run
You can deny me, you can decide
To turn your face away
No matter 'cause there's

Something inside so strong
I know that I can make it
Though you're doing me wrong, so wrong
You thought that my pride was gone, oh no
There's something inside so strong
Oh oh-oh-oh-oh-oh, something inside so strong

The more you refuse to hear my voice (ooh-weh ooh-weh ooh-weh ooh-weh)
The louder I will sing
You hide behind walls of Jericho (ooh-weh ooh-weh ooh-weh ooh-weh)
Your lies will come tumbling
Deny my place in time, you squander wealth that's mine
My light will shine so brightly it will blind you
Because there's

Something inside so strong
I know that I can make it
Though you're doing me wrong, so wrong
You thought that my pride was gone, oh no
There's something inside so strong
Oh oh-oh-oh-oh-oh, something inside so strong

Brothers and sisters, when they insist we're just not good enough
Well we know better, just look him in his eyes and say
We're gonna do it anyway, we're gonna do it anyway
We're gonna do it anyway, we're gonna do it anyway
Because there's

Something inside so strong
I know that I can make it
Though you're doing me wrong, so wrong
You thought that my pride was gone, oh no, oh no
There's something inside so strong

Something inside so strong
I know that I can make it
Though you're doing me wrong, so wrong
You thought that my pride was gone, oh no, oh no
There's something inside so strong
Oh oh-oh-oh-oh-oh, something inside so strong
(Oh oh oh) oh oh-oh-oh-oh-oh, something inside so strong
Oh oh-oh-oh-oh, something inside so strong
You spin me right 'round, baby, right 'round

Not to rain on the parade, but it just occurred to me that Dave may have an all-ABBA set in store for Friday, in honor of Mamma Mia!...

So Annalisa did her M3S on this subject, Paul Simon "Under African Skies", Johnny Clegg "Scatterlings of Africa" and then Special AKA "Free Nelson Mandela".  And nobody got the answer until 2 songs afterwards.  I was dialing but couldn't get through, and the prize was 3-day passes for the Outside Lands festival in GG Park next month.  Damn!

I guess Dave probably assumed that not many Fogheads would care too much about Mandela's b-day & Annalisa's results sure made it look that way.
