indeed, I was gonna post it yesterday (I came of age reading New York magazine), but figured no one else here would know his name
I'd never heard of him before yesterday - Tom Wolfe wrote his obit for Time.

I recognized his name, but wouldn't have been able to tell you who he was.

I remember reading a piece on him and the Chron's own Phil Bronstein (I think) in Rolling Stone back in the 70s. Can't remember much more than that though.
