The Drive, 01/21/08: Happy Birthday, MLK

U2's "Pride (In the Name of Love)" unsurprisingly kicks off the set.  I wonder if Dave is dusting off Stevie Wonder's "Black Man."

Well, "Black & White" is a nice choice.  I suspect this will be a bit lighter than Dave's.

I'd love for either to play the Chevy Chase/Richard Pryor "Word Association" bit, followed by Sly's "Don't Call Me Nigger. Whitey".

This ism, that ism, ism-ism-ism.

BTW Gaz, i started listening to that '74 CG chart show -- you'll get to hear Andy Williams' take on "Solitaire", which actually charted in the UK that year, more than a year before the Carpenters had the US hit with that Neal Sedaky, by cracky, tune.

HM to Rod Stewart's vocal on "People Get Ready," a/k/a, "the last time he really tried."

BOS the Rascals fab "People Got To Be Free" -- inspired by the assassinations and unrest of '68 and released ASAP by Atlantic.

VHM the Cat Man.

Most unexpected of set: "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother."

Did McCartney say "Blackbird" was written with Black America in mind?  I thought that had been a Manson misread?

VHM Hollies, "He Ain't Heavy".  This has been a nice surprise, and certainly a different tack (less confrontational) than what Dave does -- easy on the speeches, heavy on the feel-good brotherhood sentiments.  Dunno what "Blackbird" is doing here -- is there a connection I'm unaware of?

That's news to me. Tho' it might explain why Dionne Ferris covered it.

And Sylvester!  (The Princess sent me an MP3 of this ages ago, and now I can't find it.)
