it was a fun show!  he's very energetic (he must take supplements).  I recognized quite a few songs, actually.  Seems like he did quite well on the charts (17 Top 40 hits!). The Springfield came off the stage a couple times into the audience and worked the crowd, got a little girl onstage to banter and sing with him (ironically, the song they sang together was "Don't Talk To Strangers," but she disregarded that advice and was charming).  He did a little Claptonesque bluesman solo guitar thing on a strat before his professional band went through Crossroads.  decent ax chops, I suppose. He came out for his encore sans vest and his, dude, his 60 years body looks pretty decent, I gotta say.  He knows how to work the crowd, for sure.  I had more fun than I thought I would.

Not sure if Peter Hartlaub was there, though.  Peter and I recently discussed the upcoming Rush concert (Aug 9 Shoreline, they're doing Moving Pictures), but he might skip this one, b/c it's on his birthday.

Tonight I'm seeing Johnny Rivers at the Alameda County Fair; on Sat its Tower of Power.  Also planning on Grand Funk July 8, maybe War on July 11.  There's also my display of rock music memorabilia in the Hobby Building; I'll post pics on FB.  Fair runs now thru July 11 in Pleasanton: http://www.alamedacountyfair.com/2010fair/home/index.php

Great show. Played mostly classics. A great one man show. He gently stroked and also vigorously strummed the guitar, harmonica, piano and organ. Even slipped in some hockey and Red Wings references which brought our some hoots and hollers. Beautiful people there too. Everyone I talked to was wonderful. I sat next to a 72 year old woman and her daughter. This cat is going to bed tonight one musically happy cat. If you have any Neil love in ya, go see him Monday night before he hits the road for a small tour. He's kicking it off locally.

My Review of Paul MacCartney's Saturday Sound Check (from outside AT&T Park)

I heard Paul McCartney’s Saturday afternoon sound check... I was biking by and the band started in and played for about an hour...  Apparently, some VIP ticket holders got to sit in on this, so he had a few fans in the stadium while this was happening. It was great: the sun was out, it was warm and a BEATLE was performing!  I heard Birthday, I’m Looking Through You, Lady Madonna and a couple other Beatles tunes.  At one point The Cute Beatle was plinking around on the piano, playing some smooth jazz type of chords and launched into a little comedy bit:

“Time for your massage (pronounced MAH-sawzh, emphasis on first syllable) ...  (pause, more tinkling chords)  Let me know if the music is too too your liking  ...  would you like the Cream or the Oil...?  -- I’ll take the oil! —Well, we’ve only got the cream!  -- well, then I guess it’ll be the cream..."  etc.  

He played lots of other tunes I didn't recognize.  Some I did: San Francisco Bay Blues (or whatever it's called, Clapton does it), It's So Easy that I know from Linda Ronstadt.  Lots of folks were lingering on the sidewalk, trying to peer through the fence or standing back near the Lefty O'Doul bridge so they could watch the viddie screens.  Many folks had on Paul/Beatle shirts and whatnot.  

It was fun, although when Sir Paul stopped doing a song, a couple ladies near me would do the Wheau-heau! scream.  (Why, ladies, WHY?  He can't hear you from out here, he doesn't care anyway, and more importantly, why can't you shaddup so we can listen to his onstage chit chat? That's WAY more entertaining that your piercing yelp.)  

So I moved back toward the bridge, found a seat and chillaxed near some meth-heads, who were also Paul fans judging from their own form of chattering. Also one of them had a guitar and he played along at times.  (Then one started doing some Talking Heads, which was a genre shock, but the lyrics he improvised/malformed worked well given their apparent lot in life: "Where is my beautiful WIFE?  Where is my beautiful HOUSE?"  -- we all had a laff at this.)

pretty cute.  I didn't go to the concert itself, so this was pretty sweet...
