found this interesting article.  It landed in my news filter because the pipes player is in Wake The Dead.  Looks like it might be interesting.  Don't know how close to Ashland Urth is!

Sounds interesting, and the price is right, but Ashland is about 5 hours from here, at the southern end of the state, while I'm about 40 miles from the northern border.
I guess we southerners figure all of Oregon is next door to anything in Oregon!  I'm intrigued by this band, and wonder if they'll come south.  Not even sure where they're centered.
Don't stand in the way of LOVE!

There was once a sign on the top of the Siskiyou Summit (as one crosses into Oregon from CA on I-5) which read:

We shoot every third car from California.
And two just passed.
"Music is the Earth, People are the Flowers, and I am the Hose."

I gather there's still a slight undercurrent of resentment towards Californians here, although the only two examples of it I've encountered were both couched as jokes by people I was already friendly with, so I chose to let them pass. Besides, I've already run into a whole lot of expat Californians here, so I figure in another couple of years we'll outnumber the natives anyway. :)

Reminds me of a bumpersticker I read about from Alaska a number of years ago when the pipeline was under construction: "Happiness is 30,000 Texans heading south with an Okie under each arm."

Btw, there's a certain amount of truth to Colbert's comment.
Let's get right to it.

Coachella

The lineup for Coachella was announced today, if anyone here cares:

http://www.coachella.com/updates/news/2010lineup

I'd count on a fair number of these bands coming thru the bay area (and hopefully Portland) in the days surrounding the festival. I'd love to see the reformed Pavement, and also Them Crooked Vultures would be way cool.
Let's get right to it.

Review of last night's Norton Buffalo Tribute Concert at the Fox in Oakland, with full sets by Bonnie Raitt, Doobie Bros, Steve Miller Band, with guests George Thorogood, Elvin Bishop, Maria Muldaur, Roy Rogers, others.  It's repeated tonight and I'll be there:

Lots o' fun, very much as above link described it.  Apparently it was filmed, so look for it as a future PBS special and eventually on DVD.  Great to see the artists in various combinations in a small venue, great comraderie.  The restored Fox is beautiful.  Norton's ol' band the Knockouts opened with high energy blues-rock set, then joined by Raitt, excellent as usual, and very sincere with her sentiments.  The Doobies then rocked with a dozen of their early hits ('72-'76), Elvin Bishop joined them for a fun version of "My Dog" and later Tom Johnston's daughter joined them to belt out "Some Kind of Wonderful."  During 20-min break, I scoped out the signed memorabilia up for auction in a room off the main lobby, then Steve Miller Band did a two-hour set of greatest hits sprinkled with bluesy jams, joined in and out by the various guests, including George Thorogood on "Bo Diddley."  Huey Lewis was to have been on bill, but supposedly got stuck by weather in Montana.  I left at midnight to make sure I caught BART, so missed last half hour.  A real good vibe in the house all night long, can't wait to see it on TV/DVD.

that is one badly-laid-out web page -- methinks the Merc needs a new webmaster.

I saw the Editors last week at the Warfield.   pretty fun,  I won tix from The Menace's Attic show on KUSF.  They have a sort of Interpol sound said my gf, and their latest record features lots of synths.

The Antlers opened -- they were good, three piece, drums, guitar/keys, keys. Big sounds,  sort of a symphonic approach, vox reminiscent of Mercury Rev maybe or Arcade Fire -- and so did a band called Dig, which I missed.

Wow. I watch so little TV and sadly missed this gem. Neil is near the top of my enjoyment list.
I'll have to see if any of it made it to YouTube.
