Wow, a few bands there that would be worth seeing. I'd vote for Ray Parker Jr., The Sweet and El Toooobes for sure, and also the Smithereens so long as DiNizio keeps his stage banter to the music and not politics.
Let's get right to it.

At our 40th high school reunion last year at the Boardwalk, Papa Doo Run Run was the band on Friday night, and it was a lot of fun.

Local band Walty is at Hotel Utah tonite, apparently they're going to re-create Thin Lizzy's Live and Dangerous LP in its entirety!  (They performed "Cowboy Song" on KFOG this morning.)  Why? Just because.

Saw one of my all-time fave bands last night for the first time in about 7 years. The Young Fresh Fellows have a new record coming out on Yep Roc, so they did a couple of "cd release party" shows in Seattle and Portland over the weekend. I don't think they're going to hit any other cities, so this was another instance where I was really happy to be here. Was a great time--they were not nearly so drunk and sloppy as I remember them from days of yore (but then again neither was I). And they played a TON of songs from their first few records--some things I don't remember having heard them ever play back when. Really enjoyed the show, except for the fact it didn't get over until 1:30, which means I wasn't in bed til after 3, and so I am wiped out today. I'm gettin' too old to keep those kind of hours.
Let's get right to it.

Report on Elvis Costello Amoeba Music in-store today (SJMerc blog):

Hundreds of fans, many who had lined up for hours, packed San Francisco’s Amoeba Music at noon today to watch Elvis Costello perform a 40-minute set to promote his new slab of Americana, “Secret, Profane and Sugarcane.”....

Initial names have been released for this year's HSBG. There's a few particularly notable ones--like Steve Martin and his Steep Canyon Rangers, Lyle Lovett and his Large Band, Mavis Staples, World Party (a personal fave), Old 97s, and lots of others. Whole list is here:

I'd bet Elvis Costello is added to the bill once his local dates in August are past, given the rootsy, countrified bent of his new record.

Looking fwd to this, as usual.  Stalwarts Earl Skruggs and Del McCoury band are there, too.  I like gettin' my bluegrass on here.  Marianne Faithfull might be fun.  I'm sure Steve Martin will either bring out Earl Skruggs to play (if Earl wants), or perhaps Earl will bring Steve out.  They've perf'd together in some banjo supergroup iirc.

I'm gonna get some wood next Monday. Win wood that is. Can hardly wait. Saw him a few years back at Kaboom and he sounded great. Seen Clapton more than a few times but together with Winwood will be a real treat.

I think it will be a great show.  They play guitar together real well.  During the Blind Faith sessions, they had trouble telling who was playing what licks.  That's how similar they can play.
