Would have loved "Hard to Say I'm Sorry" in its entirety; that, "Steppin' Out," and "Abracadabra" (with touches of Police and Men at Work) are, as best I recall, what my fall '82 sounded like.

And I'm suddenly reminded how remiss I was to leave Joe Jackson altogether out of my paper two years ago on straight artists addressing gay themes in song.  After hearing "Real Men," I falsely assumed that JJ was gay and that "you can dress in pink and blue just like a child" was an especially clever way of hedging his bets for Top 40 consumption.

Whatever.  "Steppin' Out" is still an impossibly gorgeous song.  "We are young, but getting old before our time / We'll leave the TV and the Radio behind . . ."

Indeed. He's rather fallen out of the favor of the musical cognoscenti, but I still think he has it in him to be every bit the equal of his contemporary, Mr. MacManus-Costello.
