Passing on April Fool's Day would be quite the insult, no?

Ditto, Mr "Guest", whoever you are.

I always hate situations like this because even people who normally would be anti-Pope tend to go all gooey and don't-speak-ill-of-the-dead-y.
But as an EX-Catholic I have no qualms saying that the Church is a corporation run by some sad, old, closeted, hypocritical, misogynistic men. And I have absolutely no hope that the next pope will be better -- indeed he'll be far worse (and more dangerous) because he'll be younger and more techno-savvy.  God(dess) help us all.

a split decision here.  One one hand, we can all agree that the pope was anti-gay, anti-choice, anti-woman (as far as priesthood), anti-birth control, etc.  Not good.

On the other hand, he was against the war, the death penalty, and when he kissed a child with AIDS in San Francisco, it went a long way towards helping people overcome the fears of touching AIDS patients.

I don't think it will get much better with the new pope.  I'm especially sickened by Bush's praise of the pope, and this whole 'culture of life' thing.  What a fuckin' crock of shit coming from W's lips.

I echo the comments bemoaning the "culture of life" hypocrisy.  But I haven't heard anything about the potential candidates to replace JPII.  Although I'm very cynical about these things, I do hold out scant hope that the next Pope will be a bit more modern in his mores.

But I wish he and Schiavo had passed on the same day so that we could make our ignoring of the news more efficient.

P.S.  Apparently someone's selling on eBay a painting of Terri Schiavo and Johnny Cochran meeting at heaven's gate.  Lawd have mercy.

Indeed. As sweet as that gesture seemed to many, it inadvertently perpetuated the idea that children with AIDS are innocent victims, while adults (especially gay men) somehow deserve what they get. (Oh, and we won't talk about priests with AIDS.)  Add to this the shameful insistence by the Church in third-world countries that condom use is a sin -- how many will die of AIDS due to that little pronouncement?

OK, I'll calm down now...

The Chron on Sunday devoted the whole front section to him, and they had several Pope headlines & photos from the past, including one of him hugging a full-grown gay man.  So methinks that criticism is a bit off-target.

But I can't agree more about the other criticisms, although ANY pope would have maintained the Church's stand on all of them.  To JPII's credit he did put an end to the Church's unofficial stand on anti-Semitism & personally did a lot to heal the divisons still lingering from WWII.

I bet Cardinal Ratzinger (the hard-liner who gave all of JPII's most conservative pronouncements their doctrinal authority) becomes the next Pope, but he won't last 5 years because he is so old.  Only with him gone can the Church begin to modernize & catch up to the realities of the 21st Century.

so far my favorite repercusion of the Pontiff's passing is that in order to attend the state funeral, Prince Charles has had to reschedule his wedding with Camilla P-B.

What a schlmozzle!
