All the major media are now declaring Webb the winner in VA.  By about 7200 votes, and although Allen says he won't concede until the canvasing (whatever that is) concludes, he won't demand a total recount if things don't change for him.

Canvassing (if I heard the explanantion on CNN the other nite correctly) is a not-quite-recount where they make sure everything was recorded correctly -- they look for transposed numbers ("49" being entered as "94", etc).

George Allen concedes defeat in VA:

Like most Dems, I'm happy ... but I'm also a realist.  George Allen was a complete F---ing asshole for most of the campaign and he STILL came within, what, 7000 votes of winning (out of 2-1/2 million cast).  Everyone outside of Fairfax county voted for him because he's a racist idiot. That's pretty damn scary in 2006.

More aftermath: Ken Mehlman is leaving as head of the RNC...

Not only did the GOP lose big this week, but Bill Maher outed Mehlman as gay on Larry King Wed nite (in fact, Maher's comments were edited out of the replay).

One last Election addendum, from an email sent to me by an old friend who lives in Virginia/suburbs of DC:

"As I walked up to the [polling place] entrance, a guy older than me blocked my way along with two of his group. I said, "let me pass, please" and he actually said, "not until you agree that the sanctity of marriage is only in the union of a man and woman "(guess what one of our propositions was - yes I know it's 2006, but unfortunately I'm also in Virginia). When I asked him to move again in a louder voice, he said the same thing louder! I said I agreed to the right to vote without being intimidated or harassed at the polling place, and he finally stepped aside and yelled after me "Then you're in the wrong country, lady".

Luckily, a woman I know from my neighborhood was inside registering voters, and she told me who the polling captain was and I reported the jerk. They headed out there to stop him and await police."
