CG/VIP/KPOO/WLNG etc Week of 5/1/06
« on: May 01, 2006, 12:08:58 PM »
Starting this off since Mike's on vacay today & tomorrow.

And to continue the Peter Gabriel lovefest of earlier this morning, Judge kicks off his noon show on KPOO with George Duke, followed by Shock the Monkey. Brotha is branching out in his pursuit of da funk!
Let's get right to it.

I was in the car earlier (treated myself to dim sum out in the Avenues), and heard some of Judge -- what sounded like a Manu Dibango follow-up to "Soul Makossa", and then a Bar-Kays song from '73 called "You're Still My Brother", with a very interesting lyric, something like "even tho' you burn crosses on my lawn, you're still my brother". Wow.  And after he played it, Judge said "you're still my brother... but Colin Powell? Condoleeza Rice?  I don't know..." LOL!

and since I got home -- good god, the B-52s, "Mesopotamia" followed shortly thereafter by Stevie Nicks, "If Anyone Falls"! The Total Experience in Sound, indeed!

Just heard William Bell's original (I assume) 1968 version of "Forgot To Be Your Lover" which I knew only in its Billy Idol incarnation from the mid-80s. Had no idea this even existed--and it beat's Billy's take all to hell.
Let's get right to it.

Whoever the jock that follows Judge is another student of the all-over-the-map school of programming. He led off his show with about 20 minutes of Sonny Rollins, followed by a couple of early-70s John Lennon tracks, followed by How Soon is Now. Big points for variety.
Let's get right to it.

Got to wake up to JJ on KPOO this morning. Among the gems:

Hues Corporation, "Rockin' Soul"
The Valentinos (feat. Bobby Womack), the original 1962 "Lookin' For a Love"
Dee Dee Warwick, the original "I'm Gonna Make You Love Me" (new to me -- it pre-dates even the Madeline Bell version, which pre-dates Supes/Temps).

VIP's "Wednesday Nite '80s" gives us Ashford & Simpson's "Solid" back-to-back with Jennifer Holliday, "And I Am Telling You, I'm Not Going".

The Mother of All Katrinas makes an appearance on CG -- right after White Plains' "My Baby Loves Lovin'"

a veritable Tony Burrows love-fest on  CG today--heard Beach Baby earlier this morning, and now it's White Plains' My Baby Loves Lovin.'

All we need now is Love Grows Where My Rosemary Goes and Gimme Dat Ding and we'd have a grand slam.

Followed by Di Katrinna di Tutti Katrinni--no, not Crowded House, it's Walking on Sunshine.
Let's get right to it.

Katrina/White Plains JINX!

was Tony Burrows involved with Brotherhood of Man ("United We Stand") too?

BTW, it looks like they fired that Alex Belfield guy who used to follow Dean. Guess Dean's army of litttle old ladies didn't like Alex's smarmy, opinionated brand of humour.

Indeed he was.  He claims his solo career was derailed when the BBC essentially blackballed him for appearing with two of those groups in one episode of "Top of the Pops."
