The best line on this was from a M.A.S.H. episode where Father Mulcahy said a prayer for someone in the O.R. who was in a very dicey medical situation.  Upon noticing that Klinger had also reverently bowed his head in prayer, the Padre said,

"Why Max, I thought you were an atheist?"

"I gave it up for Lent."
