Well I called up and requested Hoedown or Fanfare for the Common Man by ELP ... Dave sounded like he might play Hoedown -- he said it might be too "weird" for most listeners but (quote) "screw them".     :D

"Hoedown" was an AOR staple back in the day -- "too weird"? I think not.

But Dave must really get nasty shit from some of the more vocal Fogheads who hate anything that isn't straight-ahead rock. He anticipates their angry calls anytime he's thinking about being adventurous.

Just as I'm sure he anticipates our raking him over the coals for sticking to close to previously visited territory any time he mails one in (like last Monday).
Let's get right to it.

I don't recognize that last song, but whatever it is it's really pushing the envelope for "strictly instrumental" songs...
Now I'm eight bits...

It seems like a crime to complain about Slaughter on 10th Avenue, but we hear it damn near every SI set these days (which themselves have been more plentiful in the last year or so).
Let's get right to it.

I remember one time, gotta be 10 years ago now, Dave did a Soul Patrol one morning and apparently some nasty (racist?) guy called him up and said "Soul Patrol SUCKS!" and Dave came on at the end of the set, obviously a bit shaken up, talking about how he had tried to engage this guy in intelligent discourse ("So... why does it suck?") to no avail.  I guess if I'd dealt with enough people like that (and he's been doing 10@10 for 25 years!) I'd be gun-shy too.

OK, how many of these have actually been requests, and how many are in Dave's "Instant 'Strictly Instrumental' Set" kit?  I feel some "Classical gas" coming on...

Let's get right to it.

Was thinking this might be Pat M.--thanks for confirming. He's done a few tunes with this "train-rollin'-down-the-track" sort of 2/4 rhythm.

ETA: My last year of college he played in our gym right after As Falls Wichita, So Falls Wichita Falls came out--a lousy title, but an amazing record. First time I'd ever heard a synclavier live. And then a friend and I interviewed him after the show--the most normal, accessible, down to earth guy you could ever want to meet. Some of his work since has been kind of bland, but thanks to that night, the guy is aces in my book. (And another Missourian, Mshray--he's from Lee's Summit.)
Let's get right to it.

I think a lot of people get their ideas from Dave, so it's a circular thing.  I heard Classical Gas last time on SI, and liked it, so I'm requesting it again....

Woo Hoo!  keep postin', bub!

I will... you set the bar pretty high for posting quantity though :-)

Ah well, Dave led me on about Hoedown.   Guess it didn't make the cut -- maybe next time.

Yeah yeah, what you really mean is you have no life from 10am - 10:40.

By the way, this was just a gratuitous post in order to bump up my quantity.   :)
