Dunno what's on today's set list, but off the top of my head, big musical trends in 1963 were
Beatlemania and more generally the British Invasion, folk music, surf music, girl groups, and
an early wave of what later would be called "world music," i.e. Dominique, bossa nova
records, etc.

actually, Beatlemania happened in England in '63 but not until '64 over here. And by the look of the setlist, DW is ignoring the Fab Four altogether. Great stuff.

Listening now -- loved the Cronkite "JFK is dead" --> "End of the World" segue.   Always wished I could've heard Dave Morey's legendary "where did the shots come from?" --> "Up on the Roof" seg.

Indeed, I'm a little surprised about the lack of Beatles, but 5 songs in there hasn't been a loser so far. Including a personal favorite, which is also perhaps one of the more sexist songs ever recorded.

I know folks for whom "Hey Paula" is quite a HFH.

Mostly because I was of a later generation, but when I hear this song I think of the scene in Animal House where Karen Allen, Peter Riegert, Donald Sutherland and Tom Hulse are smoking pot.
