25 July 2016: it's... 1967!

will catch up later.

**SPOILER ALERT** - nothing in the set even remotely qualifies as a rarity. :(

Listening while trying to get some work done. Mike's right -- so far there's nothing that hasn't appeared a number of times before (I'm only on tune #5 though).

But this version of Higher and Higher doesn't sound exactly like the version I'm used to hearing. Intentional, or did DW find an alternate version by accident?

Btw, he mentioned in the intro that there's a "My 10 Tunes"-like component to the set. All 10 songs have something in common, and there's a prize if you can figure it out. I don't have a clue as of yet, but what else is new?
Let's get right to it.

Post set thoughts: Nope nothing rare, but some good songs nonetheless. Re the quiz DW posed, what do these 10 songs have in common? Well, I won't give any spoilers, but I will say it was kind of dumb. (No, not "none of these artists has ever been in my kitchen.")

And there was a bonus track, which DW mis-named in the backsell. Sunshine of Your Life? I don't think so.
Let's get right to it.

Yes, weird version of Higher and Higher. More echo, less presence. Not as good, but variety is good.

This version of Groovin' sounds weird too, like they're in a cave. Maybe that's the theme...

Lame theme, yes. Choose one or t'other.

And the bonus track doesn't fit the theme, does it? He didn't indicate that it did. So what's the point?

Well, since the theme pretty much equates to "songs other people have recorded other than this version", I would guess that someone somewhere once did a cover of "Sunshine of Your Life", errr, ...Love." But yes. Very very weak theme.

In fact, it might as well have been "none of these artists has ever been in my kitchen."

One of my fave cover versions, in fact:

BUT (looking at the list), Aretha's "Respect" IS the cover (of Otis' original), and I'm totally blanking on who covered "Groovin"

Listening now. "I'm A Believer" is an alternate version.
Tuned to a natural E

Yeah, he said in the backsell that, besides the Aretha tune, the Monkees' I'm a Believer was a cover of the Neil Diamond original, and Somethin' Stupid had been recorded by someone else (can't recall the names) prior to Frank & Nancy doing it. Like we said...DUMB.

(I wonder if he'd intended to do an Original Versions set and then found out that some of his picks were in fact covers themselves?)
Let's get right to it.
