20 Nov 2014: it's... 1980
« on: November 19, 2014, 08:04:04 PM »
Earlier: If there ends up being a thread, I'll probably be in bed, but I'm gonna guess either '75 or '80.

ETA: Well, I was right about 1980 -- and the thread just went up.

I requested Jimmy Ruffin's "Hold on to My Love" -- if I can't get it played the day after he died, then when? (And funny that his biggest hit "What Becomes of the Brokenhearted" was in '66 -- just missed that opportunity.)

Lots of swell suggestions in AL's thread (and I don't just mean mine and Cap'n Jack's).  Hope we actually hear a couple.

BOS1 Pretenders "The Wait" -- figured we'd hear them with Chrissie in town, nice that we got something other than "Brass in Pocket" which someone had the, um, brass balls to request.

Blues Brothers --> Steve Forbert "Romeo's Tune". Not a segue that made sense to me (oh I guess it was after "Drivin'..." so OK)  VHM to Forbert but I wish this wasn't the only song of his we ever hear.

BOS for the Jimmy Ruffin, for obvious reasons, but also to H&O, a longtime fave that started out as a guilty pleasure.

Oh jeez, not this Bosom Buddies clip AGAIN?!?!?
Let's get right to it.

Romantics "What I Like Aboutchoo", VHM. This was as delightfully all-over-the-map a set as you could possibly ask for.

Of course there was some grumbling about "no Bruce?" but this was as true to the orig Morey concept as it gets. And 2 bustouts to boot.

I was a big H&O fan at the time, and they'd already had 2 middling hits off that LP that made me wonder if RCA knew what they were doing: their Tom Petty imitation "How Does it Feel to be Back", and the umpteenth cover of "You've Lost that Lovin Feeling".  When "KOML" was released I thought it was a great pop single but it seemed like a fluke -- I had no idea the streak of success it was about to launch. Ya just never know.
