I switched to that mid-anthem, they're showing the crowd, the players, and I'm thinking "who is that butchering the anthem?"  Then there was a undeniable Stevie screech and then I knew.  At times he was almost on key, but it was pretty awful.  I've lost all respect for the guy now that he's a clown on American Idol.

The SoulTrain marathon on Centric continues apace.  Just caught the Spinners doing their 1979 flop "Body Language"  -- damn, some of the worst lip-synching I've ever seen on this show (and that's saying somethng).

Now we're into an '80s episode -- the kids are dancing to Sheena's "Strut" and the guests are Donna Summer and the Staples -- could this be the show where Mavis does her cover of "Slippery People"? Answer: YES!!!  One of the great cover versions of the '80s.

ETA: a few hours later, and we're into a late-'78 show with disco in full bloom. Peaches & Herb are 'bout to shake they groove thangs.

even tho' there are only TWO Best Song nomineees at this year's Oscars... they're not planning to perform either on the awards show this month. Buh-bye, Muppets!

This latest PBS oldies-fest -- '50s and early '60s, hosted by Ronnie Spector and Jon "Bowzer" Bowman -- is a tad depressing because some of these folks are REALLY old. Jay Black can still sing but he looks every year of his age (73) and then some.

Musicians "real" ages are high because of their hard livin'. We got an obvious and sad example just within the last couple of hours.

I commented earlier on FB about a Smokey Robinson show on KRCB -- Gwen Ifill interviewed him (circa 2009) and Teena Marie, Howard Hewitt and Musiq Soulchild sang some of his songs. That was followed by another more recent hour where Gwen interviewed Valerie Simpson and Patti Austin sang Ashford & Simpson songs. Nice Stuff.

saw most of the Valerie Simpson show.  Definitely a different sort of TV show.  Nice stuff indeed.

watching the Sharks play at MN -- the Wild actually have a real live hockey-rink organist, playing versions of stuff like "Hold the Line" (cute).

KQED showin that "best of Soul Train" hour again. Teddy P looking *SO* young (and showing a bare midriff). Lawdy.

Astoundingly, the GGBridge fireworks are NOT on TV. NBC Bay Area had a split screen (with "America's Got Talent") for a few minutes, then dropped it. WTF?  The soundtrack itself is quite, um, gimmicky -- not like "Kaboom" at all.
