Oh, and this was news to me: Spring Awakenings, which seems to be the fave to win Best Musical, has music by Duncan Sheik.

For those of you with HBO, you'll want to check out "Flight of the Conchords".  Pretty funny stuff, with a couple of funny songs thrown in each episode.

Yeah, I saw some of that last night at a friend's.  Good stuff.

My new favorite show!  The songs are absolutely freakin' hilarious. My fave so far is "The Humans are Dead".

Meanwhile, anybody else catch any of the Live Earth stuff today?  I'm lucky enuf to have Sundance Channel, which had London & NY acts live all day. Saw Keen and Metallica and KT Tunstall this morning; just caught Roger Waters doing a hefty chunk of DSOTM and "Another Brick...". Right now Lenny K is letting love rule.  My only quibble: the highlights montages they've been showing in between sets didn't identify the artists being shown, some of whom were obvious and other of whom I had no clue who they were.

I just caught up with Episode 2 -- the one with "Inner City Pressure", their dead-on Pet Shop Boys parody.  These guys are brilliant.

Have you seen their sendup of David Bowie circa early 70s? Also brilliant:

For those with digital cable or a Dish, Fuse TV is starting it's own variation on Idol/Rock Star etc.   A Battle of the Bands, with John Lydon as one of the judges.  Begins Wednesday, July 11, 10:00pm, on FUSE.

That song ("Bowie's in Space") was the centerpiece of this week's episode. HI-larious.

Dunno why, exactly, but Fox SportsNet used the JS, "Ride the Tiger" for the usual late-in-the-game montage of A's highlights.

according to a post on the NYRMB, PBS's latest "pledge month" acquisition is Respect Yourself: the Stax Records Story, a 2-hour docu with lots of music, narrated by Samuel L Jackson. It's supposed to be quite good. So look for it on KQED, KTEH, KCSM... I'm sure it'll be played MANY times.

Yet another PBS Pledge Drive where-are-they-now music special, this one devoted to "'70s Pop". A good one-third of it was recycled from the previous Disco Specials (KC, Taste of Honey) but some new perfs from Orleans, John Ford Coley (without England Dan), Starland Vocal Band -- it was quite Gaz-tastic.  Highlight: Andy Kim, in full '70s Neil Diamond-lookalike mode (he's clearly had work done and dyes his hair raven-black), doing "Rock Me Gently".
