So I met this guy recently who's a huge Deadhead. Bought Phil Lesh's autobio, has gone to dozens of shows, talks as obsessively about them as I sometimes do about Grace, Paul and Marty. I went over to his apartment a few nights ago and he played a Dead album that absolutely floored me -- mostly gentle acoustic stuff, with gorgeous piano backings that I would have sworn were David Freiberg. I didn't recognize any songs other than a cover of "If I Were a Carpenter" (one of the lesser tracks, actually). I don't know if it was a mix tape or a real release, but the guy (who mumbles, to my chagrin) said something twice that sounded like "Marianne Faithful" when I asked him what album it was. AMG didn't help me; do any of you (Geoff? Rod? Urth? Ali?) know what this might have been?
(He's coming over tonight, so the sooner the better for any response. Grazie!)
