looked it up, here's what Allmusic says:

Inspired by the success of his friend Patti Smith, who also married a background in poetry with a career in rock music, Carroll began writing songs; in 1978, backed by the San Francisco band Amsterdam (comprised of guitarists Terrell Winn and Brian Linsley, bassist Steve Linsley and drummer Wayne Woods), he cut a handful of demos, and was signed to Rolling Stones Records. Produced by label head Earl McGrath, the Jim Carroll Band's debut album Catholic Boy appeared in 1980; the subject of significant critical acclaim, it featured "People Who Died," the group's definitive moment.

After a move back to New York...


I don't think cutting "a handful of demos" here puts him in the Janis Joplin category, but... whatever.

I had turned up the volume starting with Translator, and this track made be scramble to turn it back down!  Wos, indeed.

Dave sez volume 3 is on deck for tomorrow "probably" so I wonder if he'd gonna milk this for the rest of the week, or at least, until Friday, when we should get Hits From Hell, if there's any justice.

Personally, if there's as much of a drop in quality between today and tomorrow as there was between yesterday and today, I don't want to hear volume 4.

I told Dave he should do SF HFH on Fri, and I joked it would be "We Built This City" 10 times.  But for me it would include "Find Your way back" and "Janeyjaneyjane".  And if Jim Carroll counts, that's def a HFH as far as I'm concerned.  

I'm wondering what suddenly prompted this SF theme week, though.

Good question. In the past, these SF-centric sets have been in conjunction with Local Music month, but that doesn't seem to be the case this time around.

I can't untie the fact of these sets from Dave's recent allusions to depression on his blog posts.  Can't help wondering if he's trying to snap himself out of something.

There's probably a whole raft of psychedelic era bands he could yet tap into as well. Not to mention some of the obvious ones we'd rather not hear (Journey, Huey, etc. etc. etc.)

I am glad to say that I was entirely wrong in my prediction of the way the week went. I still don't think Tuesday's set did it for me, but the rest of the week (Friday included) were pretty darn good sets. Woke up at 7 this morning just to hear the volume 1 set again, since I missed the Great Society tune on Monday night.

I  just assumed it was a clueless intern that typed in 'Big Brother' since this is from the "I Got Dem Ol' Kozmic Blues Again Mama!" album that came out after she dumped Big Brother, but I just  heard the replay, and Dave said it too!
