i've never heard martha's version.
Quote from: "princessofcairo"i've never heard martha's version. I must bring it to the next gathering or play it for you privately. Just fab.BOS2 "Levon", one of those non-Xmas songs that mention the holiday. I always associate it with the season.
BOS: Melanie!!! "Brand New Key"
Quote from: "princessofcairo"BOS: Melanie!!! "Brand New Key"Ditto! I've never understood why this is on so many HFH lists. I love it when sexual metaphors hit #1.

Levon has defined himself by his possessions -- the money he makes, the balloons he inflates -- and thinks that by doing so, he's creating a better world for his son. And Levon cannot understand why Jesus does not take a similar worldview, why he doesn't adhere to the same mores and family values that served Levon so seemingly well. Can Levon and Jesus both be good men? That's the song's central proposition, and one of my favorite Taupin lyrics, the more I've pondered it over the years.
