Applause to Dave for a marvelously eclectic set today.

is it me, or has the threat of MAX made him kick it up a notch lately?

oh FWIW,  CG's player is working again.

Something sure has. We've been getting all sorts of little-if-ever-heard tunes for the past month or so. Even the mid-80s sets--hell, even last week's '91 visit--have been a cut above what we're used to. Bravo, I say.

(Although I don't wish any success on Max--anything that could weaken the KFOG market share in the eyes of prospective owners is a bad thing. And radio without live announcers is a REALLY bad thing. Let's hope the Fogheads are at least loyal.)
Let's get right to it.

yay! one of my fave years musically (and most memorable emotionally, tho' not all good).

BOS Paul, "Was A Sunny Day"! Been a LONG time sine Dave played this.

Sounds like Linda McCartney on the backing vocals, which would be baffling on many, many levels if it were the case.

As it turns out, that's the Roches (well, 2 of 'em, Maggie & Terri) on backup. But since they've been accused of being off-key by some, it's appropriate you'd mistake them for Linda.

Annalisa slipped in sort of an extra unofficial bonus track  too--she played D'yer Mak'er before the quiz/bonus track bit, which she mentioned as being another 73 tune. Quite nice.

Sigh.  "Saturday Night" is one of my least-favorite tracks off GYBR, along with "Jamaican Jerk-Off" and "Your Sister Can't Twist."  Would have much rather heard "Grey Seal" or "Danny Bailey," the latter of which may be the only GYBR track Dave hasn't played on 10@10.

I guess Beej mentioned this since I called him, but this was in fact a brilliant segue, from the news clips around the firing of Special Prosecutor Archibald Cox (the first two guys Nixon asked to carry out the firing resigned instead, leaving it to Alexander Haig, all of which happened on a Saturday, hence it went down in history as 'The Saturday Night Massacre') into "Saturday Night's Alright".

I called Dave to compliment him, and he said, "You liked that, did you?"

Which to me shows that he is definitely putting more effort into this stuff of late.  Even our least favorite years have at least one nice surprise.
"Music is the Earth, People are the Flowers, and I am the Hose."

More thoughts on yesterday's set
« Reply #51 on: June 14, 2005, 08:36:04 PM »
The long and the short of it:
On one hand, the MTM/Walter Cronkite clip was remarkably long--about two and a half minutes. Conversely, it seemed like the Springsteen tune got cut off before it finished. Tsk.

Another record Dave should dig deeper into: Rundgren's Something/Anything. Nothing wrong with Hello It's Me, I Saw the Light or Black Maria, but there are at least 3 other songs that'd be welcome nuggets in any 72 or 73 set: It Wouldn't Have Made Any Difference, Couldn't I Just Tell You (a strong candidate for inclusion in my power-pop birthday set list), and for novelty factor, Song of the Viking. Probably a couple others I'm not thinking of at the moment, too.

Again, can I just say what a superlative set this was. The sets we're getting lately have constituted one of the better hot streaks I can recall. Very fine, very fine indeed.
Let's get right to it.
