Geoff, just noted your current choice of a sig line ("It's all a dream we dreamed, one afternoon long ago" from the Dead's Box of Rain). Nice choice, and very appropriate given the child/father dynamic of the song. I'm sure you know this, but for the rest of the assembled, Phil Lesh wrote it for his ailing dad, collaborating with Robert Hunter for the lyrics. I recall Hunter once saying that "the words came as fast as the pen would pull."
